Well, you need more information for proper assessment.

What is the "dash" number after the 27? Look for it on the inside of the crane, the armature that holds the cylinder and flips out from the gun (I'm betting since it's nickle, that it is most likely a "-2" or a -3. Also, if you are unsure of that aspect, say you only have a photo, is there a pin showing on the upper portion of the frame just above where the barrel inserts, and in front of the cylinder? that would indicate it's a -2 or earlier. 3's are not as well sought after as S&W stopped using the pin, stopped using the recessed cylinder chambers, and stopped counter-boring all in one fell swoop with the release of the "-3" models. Finish quality started to suck with the -3 models as well (the bluing on them is not as rich and deep and the nickle plating seems thinner).

Second, If there is no dash number after the 27 on the crane of the cylinder, does the serial number begin with an "S" instead of an "N" ? That could mean quite a big difference in value. If you have a serial number, that too would help to determine date of production.

And lastly, are you absolutely sure it's a 5 inch barrel and not a 6 inch barrel? That could play a significant difference in value. And, is it "New in Box" with it's original paperwork, blue flock liner and wood box, or does it only have the dark-blue cardboard box? Or no box? If like new, but handled a lot, is there a bad "turn-ring" from the cylinder stops on the cylinder? Are the case colors on the trigger and hammer still rainbow-like or have they truned to mottled shades of gray?

A lot will depend on the version and what stocks it wears.

An early one with diamond magnas will be more expensive, and cokes will be dramatically more, while a later one with rubber grips will be less.

Any 5" LNIB nickel 27 under $600 would be buy-it-now! excellent, and $700 wouldn't be unreasonable. As age and stock desirability goes up, the price will hit $800, $900...

Well, people change stocks like they change their socks, so that's not a very good indicator. I've seen classic diamond grips on later guns and mid-70s target coco-bolos installed on brand new 2007 guns just as I've seen Hogue rubber on guns from the mid-1960's. I've seen new models with old stocks and visa-versa.

And if truly a 5" barrel, depending on dash-number, it may be worth a lot more than $700 depending on condition.

If you don't buy it, please pass along the information.

Any older N-frame in CA will bring $550 plus, if its NIB in the presentation case and a model 27-2 designtation (most likely) then I would say $750-$800

Thansks, I will check out gun broker. Not sure is a -2 or -3 yet. It looks like a good buy from what you all say in this post. Thanks again.

The point was more that the stocks themselves can be worth something. Mint diamond magnas or cokes have their own value, separate from the gun, while Hogue rubbers have very little. Stocks appropriate or original to the gun, especially if matched numbers, can add even more. As I said, the value can go up steadily, depending on age and details...

FWIW, I have a 6" nickel 27-2, 100% condition with target everything. I bought it about 10 years ago from Contra Costa Collectibles for $399.00 and at the time, I griped about the high price and almost passed on it. Unfortunately they don't get cheaper and I'd say if you're on the fence buy it. Worst thing that happens is you don't like it & probably break even after a bit.

I hope where ever it is you put a hold / deposit on it, or it may already be getting DROSed by some else.

The price guidelines above are all within reason. A true 5 inch 27-2 in the presentation case with all the goodies and original stocks will definitely command a premium.
