Sig P229. HK would be a close 2nd, but I'd take a Glock 23 before the HK.

I picked the USP. You can carry it cocked and locked if you don't want to deal with the DA/SA transition, but really the "light" LEM trigger is where it's at, and it's Easy enough to convert it yourself at your kitchen table.Originally posted by tuna quesadillaSure, a good 1911 will feed FMJ ammo flawlessly, and some of them will even feed JHP. But they lack the features that make the Glock the excellent pistol that it is. A 1911 is an enthusiast's toy, not a serious combat pistol.Comment

Voted sig, but both that one and the hk rock.Comment

I've settled with 40s&w because of the size and knock down power, and because I would need to qualify with the weapon to carry, and .45 is a big round to handle, but let's just say I did go with it, what would be a better option .45 auto, or .45 ACP? Thank you everyone for your advice and suggestions, you have no idea how much your helping, I don't know much about modern handguns, so every little shred of info is very much needed. I have no idea how to edit the poll, so if you could tell me how I will change it to glock. Also If anyone in our around sac would be able to go shooting with me so I can again use these pistols in helping me to decide, and match them up, that would be beyond appreciated, and I'll pay for the ammo. My father is a state trooper in Washington State, and uses the a Smith and Wesson M&P .40 and swears by it after using the Barreta M9 for years, as posted earlier he has decided to purchase his S&W upon his retirement. I haven't had the opportunity to fire the S&W, but from what i've heard it's amazing pistol. And now that I'm looking at the glocks and doing some reading the 10mm glock G20c, G20Sf, G29 and the G23 and G22 are catching my eye, but the price concerns me, why would a pistol with such a reputation cost so little, lol do they just want everyone to be armed haha, because I could almost get 2 Glocks for the price of one USP. And as far as the Taurus goes lol I added it because of the .40 cal and I enjoyed the look of it....I like the bulky yet compact look on handguns, that was one of the reasons for my choice of the USP, not only that, but I loved it when I used it and it has a versatilitey of ammo options.Last edited by Dr.Mauser; 02-16-2011, 2:45 AM.!!WANT TO BUY and looking for shooter/beater/reenacting grade German Waffen proofed handguns from the WWII era. It's not on your poll and it was already stated but you could get a Glock 22. It's cheaper than the HK and Sig and just if not more reliable. Also with your leftover money you can spend it on ammo and mods such as a trigger kit and sights of your choice.
You could think of a glock as the honda of the gun world. They are cheap, reliable and have a world of after market parts to customize to your liking.
That being said... I don't drive a honda and I shoot an XD40SC / 1911, but I can sure appreciate a gun for what it is.Comment

In CA, most private security companies won't allow you to carry a .45 on duty. I'd advise against getting a .45 for that reason. I worked contract armed security for a while, so I kinda know where your coming from on this. I tried a few different guns for work, so I'll give you some input.
I first started out with my company's issue gun, a Ruger P95. Horrible gun. I then went to a Beretta 92fs. It's a great gun, but I didn't like the DA/SA. I hate having different trigger pulls. I then tried an XD40. Good gun, felt great in my hand, but the high bore axis I didn't really care for. Went to a Glock 22, GREAT gun. Although the .40 ammo got kind of expensive to shoot all the time. Then I went to a Glock 17. Perfect gun, ammo's cheap, and tons of accessoried (holsters, trigger upgrades etc). I'd advise either a Glock 22 or a Glock 17.
As a previous poster said, I also don't support HK

.45Auto and .45ACP are the same thing.
Just because Glocks are "cheap" doesn't mean a damn thing. They're one of the best pistols ever made.Don't let the name fool you...Comment

Dr, show me where it says the 45 has more "knock down power" than a 40 or 9.
There is no such thing, and the difference between all three rounds is negligible with modern jhp ammo against non-barrier targets.OCSD Approved CCW Instructor

agreed.....but the likelyhood of the OP having to use his gun against someone with body armor is higher than the average citizen. In that case, it's more about penetration than power (that's what she said). No matter what, shot placement is key. If you can only be consistent with a 9mm, that the gun you should use. If .45 is your bread and butter, go with that. The one thing you never want to do is MAKE ALL YOUR DICISIONS BASED ON WHAT OTHER PEOPLE TELL YOU ON THE INTERNET!!!!!sigpic
Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

From what im hearing, I do think I'm going to try the Glock 22 and the SiG P229, and decide after comparing both on a range, hell with the spare money, I can buy the wife a gun, she needs it bad, shes always getting hassled at night and I would feel much better if she had a gun.!!WANT TO BUY and looking for shooter/beater/reenacting grade German Waffen proofed handguns from the WWII era.
