how often should i clean my SA xd 9 ?

I just bought it and put about 100 rds through it. Today I want to go shoot about 100. Is it time for a cleaning ?
Any recommendations on a good cleaning kit ?

+1... XD's are by and large very reliable firearms. the only jams/ftf/fte i had were mag related. during USPSA courses of fire you drop mags when reloading, well if a little bit of sand/rocks gets inbetween the follower and the mag body the follower can get caught/stuck (which is why it's important to clean mags between stages if you can).

In a range setting i wouldn't worry about that... just lube and shoot.

i usually clean after every range session/match and wipe everything down every couple of months if stored for a while.

The early XD's had problems with the finish that SA has since remedied. if you do have one of those and rust starts forming on the slide just give them a call and they'll refinish it for you (free). I had to do this with my XD40 Tactical.

Home defense/personal protection - clean after everytime you shoot it.

Range use - If you aren't OCD like I am, clean it when it's so dirty it starts malfunctioning or affecting accuracy, or until the dirtiness starts to bother you.

You should at least run a wet patch or two down the bore after everytime you shoot though, at least in my opinion. I like to keep things relatively clean.

Hi-power-1,000 rds i clean it (i shoot cheap dirty reloads)
Glock, just got it but i heard there good for 3-5,000
Rifles, including AR, spray some remoil everyother range session.

More guns have been destroyed from overcleaning/improper cleaning then "being" dirty. I highly recommend you dont clean it until it starts failing, that way you know how reliable it is. I trust my Hi-power with any ammo up to 1,000 rds.

PS i might boresnake them when i think of it but not often, your barrel will stay clean the more you shoot it, so shoot it!

Cleaning kit? I always use Hoppes 9 and any gun lube. Cheap patches and a brush and patch holder thing a ma jig and your good to go.

Its not set in stone for me. If it looks really dirty, I clean it.

One thing about the XD, and maybe other striker fired guns. When you clean (IE overclean) its very easy to get junk in the striker channel. For me, it caused a bunch of light strikes. When you clean that part, its best to use a Qtip with just a touch of solvent, and DO NOT OIL the channel, or even the area near it.

I don't have an XD yet. Working on getting an XD40. But with my Beretta and Sig, I don't clean them until I notice a difference in performance. I always wipe them down to get all my hand oils off of them. I use a silicon impregnated rag for that. Winchester makes one they sell at Walmart.

I think on average I shoot ~500r rounds before I start to notice that it is time to clean.

Keep the slide lubed and wipe it down after every outing and you will be just fine for a few hundred or more rounds.

The only exception is, if you know for a fact that you will not be shooting it again for a few weeks/months, thoroughly clean and oil it.

I shoot mine usually once a week.

I was taught to clean my guns after every use, and after many years still find that I have very few if any problems with any of them. IMHO 22's deffinately need cleaning after each range trip.
I also find that I really enjoy cleaning them.
