    Compensator for XD9 Tactical?

Just thinking... Are there setups out there available for installing a compensator on a Springfield XD9 Tactical?

Tom Novak of Handgunner Outlet does do comps for XD's. However, you gotta be careful about the BS23 rules on threaded barrels on semi-auto pistols. The DOJ has nothing in writing on the definition of what is a permanently installed compensator. However, if the compensator + barrel is machined as one piece (STI Trubor) or is pressed fit like the S&J Custom (www.sjcguns.com) comps on Glocks, then you should be fine.

If you want to be on the safe side and just get a ported barrel, EFK Firedragon's are pretty nice.

Thanks Shooterx10. Do you happen to know if the Firedragon compensator actually works or it simply for looks?

        Hey Joel1316,

From what I have read on other forums, it's a nice barrel. I used to have one on a Glock 35 but didn't get to shoot it all that much. The only problem is that if there is a lead buildup on the ports, then you'll need some metal dental picks to clean or a thin file to clean. Just remember not to take away any metal on the barrel.

If you want to go extra fancy, you can have a good 'smith port the slide and the EFK Firedragon barrel underneath. Just make sure the holes on the slide are larger than the holes of the barrel underneath or else the gas doesn't get vented correctly.

Any idea if anyone makes a longer barrel for the XD9?
Maybe I can get it fitted by S&J. I like the "true" compensator look and maybe the most inexpensive way to go than porting the slide?

Unfortunately, S&J only does work on Glocks for now. The only barrel maker S&J likes/recommends is KKM Precision (www.kkmprecision.com) and KKM doesn't make barrels for the XD, just yet. With the popularity of the XD pistols steadily rising, I'm sure KKM will come out with barrels for them.

We would NOT have to go searching for these options for installing a comp, if the DOJ would just do their job and state in black and white that if a threaded barrel on a semi-auto pistol is rendered inoperable IF a compensator or thread protection ring is welded, red loc-tited, blind pinned, or whatever, over the threads.

I wouldn't hold my breath for an answer from them anytime soon.

Extended barrels are available thru either Pistol Gear or Bar Sto Precision. The only two people I am aware of making comp's for XD's are S&J and us. Not sure if S&J is still working on XD's and we only make the comps by request. It is not something we carry in stock.

The Dragonfire style of comp doesn't really work very well. That is the reason why all USPSA type competitors use the regular style of comp.

The guy at the back of the class is going to raise his hand. I'm interested in learning -- what is the reason for having a barrel like this, what function does it accomplish? I assume 'comp' means competition shooting?

                      Hey rivviepop,

No, by comp he means compensator, an attachment at the end of a barrel to reduce felt recoil and muzzle flip. See the picture up top.

                      Bob H,

What's the average price of a Glock 9mm 3-port compensator that is custom made in your shop? Also, do you do press fit (any non-threaded barrel method) of a comp onto the barrel?

Yup, too much recoil... hehehe Just wanted to jazz up the XD a little and maybe get a little better handling performance out of it. The compensator probably won't even help much unless I load my 9mm on the hotter side.
