    Cz P-01

Hey all, first post. I was at the local shop today picking up ammo and asked a question regarding the DOJ and firearms approval; a police officer that happened to be in the shop overheard and suggested I ask here on calguns.net forums.

I'm interested in the CZ P-01 (I own a CZ 75BD) which currently isn't on the list of CA firearms, having only 14rd magazines at this point. Is there a place I can go/look to find out what the CA DOJ is considering to put on the list, like to find out if the P-01 is even going to be considered (w/10rd)? Do they make this type of information public, or is there an office you can contact to submit a handgun for possible approval?

The CZ P-01 is already on the approved list.

CZ75 magazines will fit into it, but will stick out below the magazine well, so get some ten rounders.

I swear I wasn't smoking crack and it wasn't on the website last time I looked (http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/) like a day or two ago, but lo an behold there it is now. Mea culpa.

I live in SF - I think High Bridge Arms is the only shop within the city limits, I hear there used to be another one but closed it's doors years ago. PD would obviously be the SFPD, just a pair of officers on duty - HBA does a lot of law enforcement business, being the only game in town there are almost always officers around when I stop to get ammo and whatnot.

Since I've already got a thread going....

Anyone here own the P-01 and care to share their $0.02? I've read a lot of online reviews (one even included the impressive tests it must pass) and the general sentiment is that it's a top-notch firearm. A bit of grumbling about the gritty trigger, which seems to be the CZ badge of honor anyways, heh.

I really like my 75 but I have smaller hands (not a big guy), and am wondering if the smaller frame of the P-01 would be more to my liking, while lightening my hold and giving me a steadier aim. I find that I can tire out a bit after 100rds with the 2.2lbs of the 75 out in the air, whereas the P-01 is some 1.7lbs or so...

            ==
"For instance, according to the information supplied by CZ, the gun had to withstand 4,000 dry-firings, 3,000 de-cockings, operator-level disassembly and re-assembly 1,350 times, complete disassembly (all the way down to pins and springs) 150 times, 100-percent parts interchangeability, a 1.5 meter drop test (54 times) on concrete, three meter drop test, firing after being frozen at -36 F for 24 hours, firing after being submerged in mud, sand and combinations--and after having been stripped of all oil. The service life must exceed 15,000 rounds of +P 9mm ammo and indeed, testing revealed the P-01 has exceeded 30,000 rounds with ball 9mm.

The reliability requirement protocol was particularly astounding. Set at 98.8 percent (.2 percent) failure rate, this was tough-enough for any gun. This equals 20 stoppages per 10,000 rounds, or 500 "mean rounds between failures" (MRBF). During testing, the average number of stoppages was only seven per 15,000 rounds, or .05 percent failure rate. This translates to a MRBF rate of 2,142 rounds. That happens to be about five times the minimum acceptable rate for the U.S. Army, which is set at 495 rounds for 9mm pistols with 115 gr. ball ammo." (1)

I don't have firing experience with the P-01, though I have handled several that have come throught he shop, and I've dry fired some that a friend owns. The trigger felt the same as the one on my SP-01, so I presume that it can be gotten rid of the same way - I sent mine off to have the trigger polished, and the hammer replaced with the competition hammer, and then the main and recoil springs replaced with reduced power springs. It shoots like a dream now.

The only thing I don't like about the P-01 is the position of the decocker, which partially influenced my decision to go with the SP-01, which has a frame-mounted safety.

Did you find someone who specializes in CZ (more or less) to get this done? I didn't have any plans to do modifications, but the more and more I read on various forums sounds like it might be the thing to do to smooth this guy out a little. I'm new to the whole gunsmithing alteration concept, I've always shot however a weapon was handed to me.

Can you elaborate on your displeasure? I got the 75 BD specifically because I like(d) the decocker and think it's a good design, it's two-stage decock is much nicer than, say, an FNP9-M that I've played with; I'm interested in your pro opinion on it. This isn't a carry, I'm just a guy who goes to the range.

I have a CZ75 BD and love it!

Pretty sure Irvington Arms in Fremont had a CZ P-01 in stock a few days ago. Did not remember the price.

CZ75 Compact magazines will fit in the P-01 and they make them in 10-round capacity as well as the normal 14-round capacity. Looks like you can purchase them via CZ's web site.

The DOJ must have been updating the site this past week. For whatever reason a ton of guns disappeared. A lot of people were freaking out -- Walthers, and CZs and Smiths, oh my...

A lot of people here like them. I'm starting to think maybe about getting one... I don't know if I can justify getting one before yet another 1911, though...

I just think the decocker is placed a little too far rearward for my tastes. I like the decocking ability, but prefer the ability to carry cocked and locked with an action-locking frame-mounted safety, like the 1911 or SP-01

I own a p-01, the person that polished the inards for me said he would never touch another with the decocker again. I had some issues with it hanging up and not going into battery after the work was done, It is being tended to right now. I have had the same work done on a SP-01 and a 97 without any problems whatever. In fact they are among the best guns I have enjoyed shooting. The P-01 is perfect without any work being done on it. I am never satisfied with stock performance and in this case should have been. Get the P-01 and you wont regret it. It shoots to point of aim with great consistency.

I picked up my P-01 yesterday and hit the range, put two boxes of 147gr HST and one box of 147gr Hydra-Shok through it at around 7 to 10yds - boy, compared to my SP-01 Tactical this little guy has some serious muzzle snap! I definitely need to practice a bunch to keep this puppy under control. Trigger is a bit gritty but I haven't cleaned it yet, I'm sure there's some slight rusting-type-crud in there from sitting around so long - Hoppes here we come.

That said I was able to get some pretty successful insurance shots (one of the IDPA guys I know called it that - double-tap to the body and one to the head in rapidness), the pistol almost realigns itself right on target on it's own; the SP-01-T seems sluggish in that regard comparatively, which makes sense being a whole pound heavier. I really like the weight distribution on the pistol, at first I thought it was a bit muzzle heavy but once you put a full mag in and stick it in the air you never notice.

                            CZ for the win!

I've had my P-01 for a couple of years now. It shoots very well for me, and is the most trust worthy compact 9mm in my collection. If I have to find some negatives about it: The trigger could be better, and grip could be slightly longer and slimmer. That's it.

It's been 100% reliable, and shoots to where I want even in rapid fire (not talking about a sub inch group, but 3-4 inches at 10 yrds in rapid fire). When I first saw pictures of people shooting the P-01 in competition, I thought it was strange. But now I fully understand.

                              It's a great little gun.

Keep in mind the following if you shoot a lot of rounds through it:

                              1) The slide retention pin has a reputation of breaking. keep extras and replace it every so often (5000 rounds for me).
                              2) The slide stop (same part as the slide retention pin) may stick into the mag well too far and a round could push it up and hold the slide back before the magazine is empty. I've grounded off the tip of the slide stop on all my CZ's.
                              3) Some CZs tend to push the next round in the magazine forward a little bit as the slide closes. Polishing the part of the slide that glides on top of the next round helps, as well as stronger mag spring.
                              4) Extra power extractor spring is popular, though I am not sure if it's necessary (purely my opinion).
                              5) lower power main spring is popular also. 15 lbs and 13 lbs are the available springs and help lower the DA significantly.

And if you get used to shooting the p-01, the SP-01 will feel like a .22lr
