    Springfield XD40 - Tight Magazine???

I'm in the market to purchase a semi-auto handgun. To help with that decision, I've been trying out several in both .45 and .40. Today, I tried a rental Springfield XD40 at the gun range. First time I've ever fired an XD.

I was absolutely impressed with its feel and accuracy, but..there was one quirk that I found surprisingly disappointing. When the magazine was loaded with 8+ cartridges, it was a "squeeze" to put it into the pistol. It seems the rounds bulge the steel magazine just enough to make it problematic. Forget about "dropping" the magazine too. This was not an issue when I was only loading 5-6 rounds.

Is this typical of an XD?

I would say definetely NOT. I own a XD40 in the 4" service model, and the mag not only slips in quite nicely, but even when dropped the mag with a full ten rounds it slips right out as well. I love my XD, no issues with it, no FTFs nothing. Has been nothing but 100% reliable for me.
    Stuff and stuff.

      Same here with my XD9.

      Drop free and a half.

Sure they didn't give you a 45 mag.

That's happened to me on my 1911 with really crappy magazines but NEVER on my XD.
Lord, make my hand fast and accurate.
Let my aim be true and my hand faster
than those who would seek to destroy me.
Grant me victory over my foes and those who wish to do harm to me and mine.
Let not my last thought be 'If I only had my gun."
And Lord, if today is truly the day you call me home, let me die in an empty pile of brass.

Never been a problem with the two XDs I purchased, an XD9SC and an XD40 Service. Doesn't sound like factory magazines to me.

I have an XD40SC and I had the same issue. The mags loosen up over time but still require a good slap to seat them with the full 8 rounds. If I download the mag 1 round it is easier to insert and release. Yes it is also difficult to release a fully loaded mag but who does that anyway. I prefer to unload the mags out the muzzle

Are you having the same problem as the OP in which the rounds cause a bulge in the sides of the magazine? Most of my pistols require a bit of force to load a fully loaded magazine with 1 in the chamber.

Is your drop-free issue related to the bulge in the side of the magazines or the force required to press the mag release?

That's normal. If the slide is forward then the top round has to compress against the slide.

I have an XD40 4 inch and my mags fit nice and loose loaded or not

Sorry should have clarified - No the sides of the magazine are not bulging it is just the spring tension that is causing the extra effort. I realize that is normal and didn't see the part in the OP's post about the magazine actually bulging.

When I first got my XD9 it was a bit tight also. But after a few rounds, slip through smoothly...just my observation. I love it so much that I have 2 more in .40 and .45.
