Springfield Custom Carry 1911 - Range Report (PICS)

I put the first 200 rounds through my Custom Carry today. I have to say that this gun feels right at home in my hand, and that I felt it performed well. The slide failed to lock back on empty a couple times, but I'm not concerned about it. Otherwise, it performed great. I like the no-dot Novak sights, and while I felt the trigger is a tad heavy (I prefer about 3 pounds) I cannot say that anything about the gun precluded me from shooting better than I could. Anyway, here's the pics.

Mostly cosmetic stuff. I have a few nice 1911's, but always wanted to have one built with more "show" stuff done to it.

Springfield's "Radical Carry Bevel" package - really rounds off the gun

Cylinder and Slide medium-length solid trigger, rounded to match

EGW GI guide rod plug, plain front (no checkering) rounded to match

Barrel re-crowned and blended into the bushing, like on a Nighthawk Vickers Tactical model (bushing rounded to match, again)

Ed Brown MSH, rounded to match and serrated

    Frontstrap serrated

High-cut or "undercut" trigger guard... one thing that Wilson/Baer/Nighthawk do, but Springfield Custom doesn't do on this gun or the PRO. I love this mod.

Wilson Bulletproof slide stop, "fbi nub" mod (shortened and counter-sunk into frame, but also rounded to match the bevel job)

Wilson Bulletproof single-sided wide safety, again, re-contoured and rounded to match bevel job

    Black-T finish

Oh, and hex head grip screws... haven't decided on grips, yet.

I already ordered all the parts I need.

Is that the 1911 I saw you picking up at Ades the day I did my PPT? Very nice gun. Nice shooting as well... I wouldn't want to cross you in a dark alley.

Nice pistol, I think half the fun of owning a 1911 is changing it around and buying all the goodies for it. I love getting packages from midwayusa and kingsgunworks the other half of the fun is the plastic pistol brigade drooling over youre all steel monster in .45 ACP no less

Thanks, guys. I got the trigger and smooth MSH in from Midway today. Still waiting on my order from Wilson, and then it's back to Geneseo. I'll take more pics before that happens, after I clean the gun... several people have asked for pics of the other side of the gun (not sure why, lol).

Nate, what range can you rapid fire at in OC?!?!?! Or is this an "outdoor" range? Nice looking 1911 btw.

You can't... I got in trouble for shooting that group

Well, sort of. I got a "hey, would you mind..." I am a member at Evan's. They know me very well, and know I'm putting lead through paper and not through ceilings or walls. When I'm there with my buddy (also a member) and nobody else, we can usually fire at will. But, this particular time we weren't alone, so the rangemaster (Pat, this time) came out to ask me to slow down. Typically I am respectful of this rule, and understand that I can't undermine his authority or the rules by rapid firing without getting a talking-to. But, this was a new gun, and I thought it would be fun to load a couple 47D's and see if I could fire fast enough to get in trouble, yet still make all the holes touch. Aside from one round, I did that

Honestly, the gun looks perfect as is, but I can never fault someone for "Making it their own", cause that's what it's really all about.

Nice gun, keep us posted please on the progress.

Very nice! If you don't mind me asking, what did the gun cost?? I have a Caspian slide/frame that i'm thinking about sending to the SA Custom Shop.

roughly $1500 in CA-compliant form. I bought it from Becky at Sporting Arms, not from Springfield directly (although I think $1500 is retail price). I'm sure that the stuff I want done to the gun will bring the grand total up past 2 grand, but my Baer TRS that I sent to Springfield Custom ended up the same. My CQB is the only 1911 I have that I haven't modified beyond hex head grip screws (Armor-Tuff'ed from Wilson to match the gun) and grips (VZ's on the CQB).

There is nothing like a great 1911... nothing. I want to improve upon my shooting, but I think I'm doing just fine and I have come a long way since I bought my first handgun in 2001. What you see in those pics is what I can do with any of my 1911's, and my GrayGuns Sigs, but I cannot say that I can really shoot any better than that. Yet

I'm considering selling my factory nickel Python and getting on the Michiguns waiting list for a real high-falutin' custom 1911 - but I'll wait and see if this Springfield Custom Carry satisfies that urge after I get it back.
