    torn between 2 1911s

yes i know this is another kimber vs sa thread but...

i've been eyeing a stainless sa mil spec and kimber custom II night sights...

now i've heard about some qc issues with kimber lately but it does come with extra stuff that the milspec doesn't have, and the difference in price is a bit less than $200.

so i guess the question for the day is, is it worth getting the kimber for the extra money or should i save my money and get the mil spec? i like how both feel and wouldn't mind getting both if i had the cash.

You're comparing 2 totally different 1911s. The Milspec is your barebones 1911- just a step up from the GI model that JMB originally designed. It has the lowered and flared ejection port, 3 dot sights, and beveled mag well. The Kimber Custom has all the upgrades...lowered and flared ejection port, beveled mag well, commander hammer, beavertail grip, better sights. The better comparison would be between the Kimber Custom and the SA Loaded model that has all the same features. The MilSpec is a nice gun but if you want the upgraded features, you'll end up spending a lot more money later.

✟ In the beginning was the 1911, and the 1911 was THE pistol, and it was good. And behold the Lord said, "Thou shalt not muck with my disciple John's design for it is good and it workith. For John made the 1911, and lo all of his weapons, from the designs which I, the Lord, gave him upon the mountain."✟

Go ahead and get the Kimber over the Milspec SA, it has the extras you'll want anyhow over the milspec. I've got the Kimber and no problems so far, now if it were a SA loaded I'd go for it.

If you are in SoCal you can get the SA Loaded on sale at Turner's.

The full length dust cover rail makes a world of difference in the "when I run out of bullets I'm going to beat you to death with the pistol" look that causes bad guys to run in fear, and lesser men to feel inadequate. It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

i like the traditional look of the mil spec, but the kimber does look prettier. and from what i've seen/read, both will work reliably post break in. i think i'll end up with the kimber... but things might change between now and next month.

Why not look for a Loaded Stainless?

In the sub-$1500 range, I wouldn't hesitate to look past a comparably-priced Kimber. In the $1500+ range, I wouldn't even consider a Kimber series II.

Yes, the Springfield Combat-Loaded is more of a comparison to the Custom II.

Hope this helps...as I remember (I am getting old) when I was looking at these:
Kimber (I think all) has match barrels, some Springfield Loaded does, some don't.
KimberII = series 80 style vs Springfiled series 70 style.

If you are close to a shop that does single shots, check out the Springfield Range Officer...that's pretty much a Mil-Spec+nicely upgraded (no night sights).

it'd be nice to have be in the 1500 range, but i'm trying to keep it below 1k, which is what the kimber is gonna cost me. i think the main thing that gives me second thoughts about kimber is the schwartz safety and quality control horror stories you hear about on the net.

Look for a used Dan Wesson, Springfield, or even a S&W (if that's your thing); all of these, in my eyes, are better values than most Kimbers. If you can find a pre-series II Kimber in good condition for under $1k, jump on it.

I love my kimber custom II and I have not had any reliability issues with it post break in. I do not where the complaints come from about kimbers and the 80 series safety, not really an issue with me.

Springfield does come with a lifetime warranty though. Loaded model would be the way to go as well if youre considering a springfield
