    Gun Safe and Gun Lock

Im looking into buying a new handgun. I have a gun safe, do I also need to buy a gun lock even though I have a gun safe? Thanks

Yes, every handgun purchase in CA must include a "safety device". Safe affidavits are for long guns only.

most new handguns come with a gun lock, and i believe you have to have one to leave the store with the gun.

Yes, I recently did a PPT and the FFL required me to purchase a separate cable lock even though I had a safe and the pistol already had a cable lock that came with it.

Some FFLs will accept a cable lock that comes with the gun, some won't. The FFLs that won't accept the included lock make it mandatory that you produce a receipt accompanying the cable lock to prove that the lock was purchased within 30 days. This was my experience at Big 5.

"Safe affidavits are for long guns only. "

i believed this to be correct until i ppt 2 lowers ftf at "a shop" and when i went to pick them up 10 days later i was forced to buy 2 cable locks. i was unable to argue at this time as the shop and the other party already had my money. and i did have proof of purchase of my safe.

on a similar note, when i purchased my first ar lower a couple years ago from "another shop" the same thing happened. not only did they force me to purchase a cable lock but they forced me to purchase a bullet button at a higher cost. again this is upon pick up after they already had my money and i provided a copy of proof of purchase of my safe.

Is it maybe because you are able to build AR pistols with the lowers? I don't exactly know the regulations behind building AR pistols, so maybe they were just covering their asses and making you buy the lock incase you decided to build AR pistols out of them.

                      Easy.
Take one of your old ones and sell it to your friend for $1.
Buy it back from him for $1.
Draw up receipts for both transactions and make sure they are dated.

This is legal and cannot be turned down by the shop (I learned this trick from a shop employee).

Now wait a minute here. If you buy a gun and it comes with a lock (and almost all do now), you are certainly getting a NEW (to you) lock within 30 days. You're getting it with a 10 day delay. This really sounds like they are gouging you. But since you mentioned Big 5, I am not surprised. Jerks.

NOTE: It has to be a DOJ approved lock.

When I picked up my CZ-75, it came with a non-DOJ cable lock. The FFL asked if I had a safe and wrote down the model number. Actually she asked me on the phone before I came to pick it up if I had the safe. When it showed up she said, well you have a DOJ safe so that's enough.

Also can't you just bring in the lock? Why do you ahve to show a receipt when you can show the actual lock?
