    rust question

I have a Sig228 that I purchased from a police trade in. I was looking at the top of the slide with an led flashlight and I noticed some brown spots that if were on skin would resemble the beginning signs of cancer. Now there is quite a bit of holster wear. My question is, what can I do to stop it from spreading and maybe protect it in the future? Any answer will be helpful thanks.

Sand off the rust and keep a light layer of oil on it at all times. Refinish when you can or not.

Thanks for the advice. What grit sand do you recommend

I'd start real fine. Maybe 400 and if that doesn't work, get more coarse. You don't want to completely ruin the finish.

Have you tried cleaning it well with a solvent and then treating with rust inhibitor lubricant?

If it is only visible with a powerful light, sanding might be overkill

I agree with Ed_in_Sac, penetrating oil and brass bristle brush would be the most aggressive I would even consider.
