Slide not locking back, Mag stuck

    Hey all,

So I'm having some trouble with my RIA 1911. Today when I took it to the range, on the last round, the slide didn't lock back. Not only that, but the magazine was almost stuck and it was rather difficult to extract the empty magazine. Any idea whats causing this?

    Thanks.

There is a problem with your mag follower and/or your slide stop.Hard to
    tell without seeing it. Pete

Hmm... If it helps, they're SAI mags and I'm shooting Tula ammo.

Never heard of SAI mags. Try some better mags. Chip McCormick or Wilsons

Loaned some of my mags, (Colts) to a friend with a RIA, all but 3 would drop free.
I would test other brands of mags.

I've tried Colt 8rounders and the one that came with the gun. The Colt ones gave me different troubles.

If you have tried other brands and the problem persists, then it may be a mag catch out of spec. Pull it apart and check for burs or damage. If all else fails replace it with a Ed Brown or Wilson. Google or YouTube to learn how to remove it.

Armscor does have a good warranty dept, If its new, you might try giving them a call.

Try taking the slide off, reinstalling the slide stop and inserting an empty magazine. Is the surface of the slide stop which is cammed up by the the little shelf on the magazine follower not engaging deeply enough? This will typically cause slides to not lock open reliably and sometimes the magazine follower comes up past the slide stop, snagging it and makeing removal of the magazine difficult.

If that is the problem, and trying various magazines reveals the same condition, you need a new slide stop as yours is out of spec.

                        They don't make mags

The combination of the slide not locking back and the mag being stuck in the gun (see if you can determine what was preventing the mag from dropping) does point toward an out of spec slide stop...but, I'd try different mags first also

I've tossed the ACT that came with my Tactical in the trash. It also kept sticking in the well. One time at the range I gave a good pull and all the guts + 8 rds of .45ACP tumbled out on the deck.

So far no problem with 2 each Wilson, Mecgar and Checkmate 7 rounders. So far ALL of them are 100% with 230gr round nose ammo and NONE of them are 100% with JHP or SWC.

I stay away from 8 rounders for the 1911. If 8 rds woud work 100% in a 1911 John Moses would have figured out how.
