    They are very accurate to shoot. The ammo is cheaper than 45 Colt or 357 mag. The S&W only comes in stainless. The guy who shoots revolvers in competition for S&W, and is the fastest revolver shooter, uses a 45acp revolver. The moon clips are a %!~(# to load and unload.

      Which revolver?

      I have S&W 625 and a Ruger Blackhawk with a 45 ACP cylinder. Both are excellent guns IMO. To use 45ACP in a swingout cylinder, it is easiest to use moonclips but you can shoot it without them. I've never tried them but Ranch Products make 1/3 and 1/2 moon clips.

      In the SA Ruger you load and eject one at a time through the gate just like any other caliber.

      I'm not going to get into a caliber war.

      Get the TK Custom tool. I have one for each of my moonclipped guns and it is worth every penny

        depends upon your desire...

        I love mine...
        you need a demooner for the smith double action guns if you want to shoot much... I buy a couple of packs of clips each time i order from brownells.. have a hundred or so now...

        great gun... will eat any 45acp ammo...and pretty accurate...
        didn't like the JM stocks on my 625 so I took the pretty stocks and put them in a drawer and put hogues on it.. that way it's just like all of my other smiths...

        again.. really nice gun.. very controllable...easy to reload.. and accurate...not accurate like my Volkmann custom is accurate but easily outshoots my springer 1911 and a shade better than my XD tactical ... about like my glock 21 with it's favorite load and the glock is stupid crazy mindboggling accurate for a glock... got really lucky on that one...

          The main difference is you can find the 357 in 7 or 8 shot in good condition for around $600 if you are patient. I've never seen a .45 revolver in 7 or 8 shot for any where near that money. Now about those 357/.45 lever rifles....

            I've got a S&W 625 and a 25. They're great revolvers, accurate and soft shooting. The moon clips are easy to load and unload. I made a tool to unload them, similar to the kind you can buy for about $10. I load them by hand, never felt the need to buy a loader.

            The only downside I can think of is they are more sensitive to primer seating depth than other revolvers, maybe due to the addition of the springiness of the moon clip. Once I figured this out and have paid more attention to seating primers all the way when reloading I haven't had a single misfire. Mine's got a lighter mainspring now as well.

              I started shooting SW Model 25's about 30 years ago in some local IPSC matches, and have a 6", 6.5" Model 25's and a 5" 625 Model of 1989. Since I shoot 1911's a lot I love the ammo interchangeability.

              They're extremely fast to reload, as JM has shown time and again. Accuracy is good, and they're well built, stout revolvers. While many use a demooning tool, I simply use a small straight blade screwdriver to lever the empty cartridges out of the full moon clip till theres only one left and give that one a fast yank while holding the clip through the center with my other hand.

              Full moon clips are very cheap and you can pre-load all your ammo into them before ever going to the range, and unload them at home when you get time. And you don't have to search for your empty brass, its neatly containly in the moon clip; all in all a very gentlemanly approach to gatherring brass as opposed to rooting around on the ground looking for empties

              As I'm sure you can tell, I'm a big fan. If I had a chance to pick up another pre-lock Model 25 or 625, especially in 4", I would. I might even consider a post-lock model and disable the lock.

              "An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

                I have a 5" pre-lock 625. It has a superb trigger job and shoots great. If you get one you will not be sorry.

                As to the question if its worth $970 I'm not sure. I have not kept up with S&W 45 acp revolver prices. Is the revolver you mentioned a S&W? If so what model?

                  I like mine a lot. It's a '52 Model of 1950 Target.

                  No worries about ammo, soft shooting though mine's strictly a range gun & only sees light target loads. Very accurate. I LIKE the moon clips. Speed loaders for a buck apiece. I don't have to chase down my brass.

                  Cons... I don't know of any. Sometimes the mooned ammo doesn't like to go into the cylinder. FTF in a revolver?

                  Another S&W .45ACP wheelgun with a pinned 4" barrel is on my "must have" list.

                    Pro= everything (except 1 thing)
                    con= moon clips
                    just a pain to load and unload, even with the tool.
                    Fun as h3ll to shoot.

                      I've got to admit a revolver in 45acp sounds fun I was thinking of one of hose machined down webleys. As far as it being worth it though depends on what your using it for I suppose. If it's a fun range gun then by all means go for it and if your okay with that price tag. However for just a little more you could buy a colt python which is IMO the best revolver out there but ymmv. Also if your looking for home defense and still want 45 I'd look at their cz 97 ten rounds of 45 in a semi auto and it's 400 or so dollars less.

                          Old school alternate is the 1917 Colt of Smith revolver. Or the new production Smith model 22-4. Fixed sights, 5.5 inch bbl, lanyard loop, perfect for trench warfare. Currently on the approved list in blue, nickel, or case colored.
                          I did have the $30 demooner and broke it (plastic), replaced with a metal curved piece that rolls the case out, and has to be unbreakable.

                          Markus, who has the CZ97 for $400?

                            Someone in the marketplace is still selling their old converted S&W. I don't think they're even asking all that much for it. I think it's gorgeous in that rugged built-up "Millennium Falcon"sort of way. If I could spare the funds, I'd be picking it up. Check it out.

                              This is the best moonclip tool.
                              RIMZ polymer clips are super easy, no tool needed.
