JPoint on handgun?

Hey anyone here running a JPoint optic on their handguns or more specifically a Glock?

I've been interested in one of these for a while but wonder just how much better it is compared to normal sights. $300.00 is a little steep but is it worth it?

I've only used EOtech's on AR's when it comes to red dots... Answers need not only apply to Glocks

A buddy that worked at my local range had a red dot (can't remember the brand) for his Glock17. It worked well but what threw me off was the tiny bit of offset from where the dot was to where standard iron sights line up. The dot sat a little higher and when you were shooting, it felt a little like floating the gun out in front of you when trying to place the dot onto the target. I'm sure this stems mainly from a lack of familiarity with that particular sight system. I've used IPSC Open guns before and with them, you experience an even greater amount of offset so I'm sure with more practice, the floating sensation would've disappeared.

As far as "better" goes.. that's a little trickier. Although red dot aiming systems are distinctly faster than irons, Im not sure if they're going to be more "accurate" or as practical. I mean to say that they're much more fragile and prone to failure than standard irons. IMO, what you gain by having a "red dot" doesn't offset what you have to give up.

.. and btw, it's also gonna cost you $300 dollars.

you had the slide cut? where did you get that done? Do you have any pictures?

I use Jpoint on my HK-Benelli M1 s90 for 3 gun.
It is a rugged, good priced and takes plenty of recoil. So I use it on my Glock 20 pig gun.

The full size M&P has the J-point. The compact has the RMR on it. The full size started out with the 4MOA jpoint but I switched it out with an 8MOA unit. There was a great deal on the 8MOA units on ebay a while back ($150) and they show up from time to time.

For serious use I would recommend the RMR over the J-point. While the RMR is almost 3-times the price I paid for my J-points, the extra ruggedness and reliability is worth the price as it lives on my daily carry gun.

Suarez and Bowie are the more publicized outfits that will do slide milling to accommodate RDS install. Note that the mounting schemes between RMR, j-point, deltapoint, etc are ALL different. Once you mill a slide for one pattern, you are pretty much stuck with it.

The up and coming outfit is American Tool over in Taylor, MI. They do excellent work on slide milling for sights as well as serrations for weapon manipulation. His stuff is so good that he's doing the handguns for several of the magpul guys (soon to be covered in some publications this summer). Doug, the owner, is a huge 2A advocate and is CA-friendly. His turnaround time is shorter that the aforementioned guys and he is also cheaper.

Here's the pic of my compact in it's current iteration. The sight milling and serrations were done by American Tool. The suppressor sights were done by Bowie - as Doug wasn't able to get a hold of suppressor sights compatible with the M&P at the time.

JPoints, Doctors, and Trijicon Red Dots are the most common slide mounted optic in USPSA Open Division. They all work well, and look the same, but have slightly different mounts. They are not 'better' than standard sights. It takes longer to acquire the dot than iron sights. It really depends on what you want to use them for. The advantage dots have is on small steel at longer ranges, like a 6" plate at 40 yards, dots makes it easy. You can choose to mount them with an adapter plate, or mill the slide to get it a little lower. I do not recommend them for a carry gun for several reasons, that doesn't mean they won't work for carry though. The light is auto on/off when the cover is removed, so you have to remember to put it to sleep and leave it on for carry. They stick up more than a normal rear sight, and if you have it under a shirt, it can be tricky. They take longer to acquire a sight picture, but with enough practice, say around 1,000 first shot times, you get used to it. And for contact distance, point shooting, it doesn't matter what sight is on the gun.

I don't have one on a handgun, but I have one mounted on my AR for close targets (30yds and in) at 3-gun matches. Its fast.

I have shot J Points on Glocks, 1911's and a revolver. Its fast and does take a little time to adjust to them, but once you do its quick. I have C-More's is why I don't have a J Point on my open handguns.

Is it worth it? I don't know what your intended purpose is for it, but a lot of USPSA Open shooters use them.....and we are a very picky group!
