Not sure what's actually on the all mighty roster, but is there anything else out there besides these revolvers?

just looking for a revolver to take camping in bear/mountian lion country. not against anything else, but I want a revolver too.

I believe Freedom Arms makes a .454 single action.
Yes you can shoot .45lc , it is like .38's in a .357.
Check out Wild Sports I think they had a Freedom Arms sa last time I was there.

The single shot Tompson Center pistols are available in 454 Casull, but then you could just get it in 450 Marlin.

In California, I don't think you will encounter anything that can't be stopped by a 44 Mag. A 41 mag or 357 mag would probably do the job on most black bears. I carried a 41 mag when I went Backpacking.

I forgot to write that mountain lions move quickly. If one came after you, and you missed with the first shot, the recoil of the 454 might not give you time for a second shot. A fast shooting 357 might be better. Just something to think about. I have no personal experience shooting charging mountain lions.

Gary Reeder makes great custom SA revolvers, this model might fit the bill. All the way up to 500 linebaugh too.

oh .357 is in the works too....10mm, .44mag also. but I want one of the "big bore, heavy hitters" too. And i'm familiar with how fast Mountain Lions move, i've seen them up close.

Freedom Arms guns require an additional cylinder if you want to shoot .45 LC. Same with their .357, etc.

If you want a .454 gun for just packing/plinking around and also shoot .45 LC, get a Ruger.

I think I watched a history or outdoorsmen channel program where two older, very experienced shooters were shooting i think .454. It looked so painful. One guy did ok, the gun whip-snapped back and up but he finessed the thing so he got it back on point-aim position quickly, the other guy had a really close call, the thing whipped-snapped back and up and look like it came within an inch of smacking him straight in the nose. ya i know "Cool Story Bro..." but I remember that scene like I just watched it.

Someone over on BARF has a Ruger Alaskan for sale w/ 500 rounds (.454+.45LC combined) for $750. Do the math on ammo+gun. I'd buy it if I lived in the bay and didn't already have one...

Edit: Here's the ad. For all I know it's posted here as well, although I don't think you vultures would've let this slide for more than a day: http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/fo...d.php?t=346683

I have a Ruger SRH in 454 Cassull and it is not brutal with 250 grn JHP at a very good stepping speed. When you get to the 320 to 400 grain hardcast at max loads that revolver starts to snap back pretty good. I'd hate to shoot it w/o earplugs and gloves. I

I have owned two Freedom Arms .454 revolvers for about 20 years now---one is 6 1/2" and the other 4 3/4"---the shorter gun came with two extra cylinders (.45 Colt and .45 ACP)---finer production guns were never made! Both are "Premier" grade and extremly accurate---it does come with a learning curve if you intend to shoot it well---practice!! The longer gun went to Alaska with me in the 90s (I didn't own the shorter gun yet). I like the .454 cartridge so well, I had a Ruger single-shot #3 carbine rebarreled to .454. A milder plinking load is 10 grains of Unique under a 300 grain LFP bullet---still very powerful, but not a hand-killer like the factory ammo. I have also shot the small Ruger revolver in .454---a REAL handful! If you are willing to put in the practice and really master the gun, it is very satisfying.

I just get a kick (sorry pun) about the notion if the round was to be named .454 casual. hehe
