For a first gun! You should probably go take a training class first. You don't want a big gun to make you develope bad habits because you didn't work your way up in caliber.

      22lr's

Yes, that's what I started with. I started with a 22lr and recently transitioned to a 9mm. Starting with a 22 allows me to practice frequently and cheaply, which helps me develop my shooting skills.

Even 9mm's can get quite expensive to shoot, and it can be discouraging if you can't shoot as well as you'd think with the heavier caliber.

Neither for your first gun. Go get yourself a 9mm Glock 19 or 17. Have you ever shot a 50 S&W? I did......once. That was enough for me. Get something you'll actually practice with on a regular basis. That excludes 460 Rowland, too unless you're a reloader.

I have a Desert Eagle in .50 AE, and while it is badass' it shouldnt be your first gun. The ammo's expensive, and it really isn't a starter gun. I personally love the .40 S&W as a starter gun, but the 9mm and even a .22 aren't bad options. It's way easier to learn the techniques with a less powerful handgun rather than a high powered caliber. Just my 2 cents, good luck

I know I can get a Rowland conversion for a 1911, but the Desert Eagle in 50SW is just so sexy.
The Desert Eagle is .50AE (Action Express), not .50S&W (And it's .500 S&W). They're two completely different rounds.

Gee, I thought there were enough clues that the OP was just pulling everyone's chain.

Wow, is it really that easy?

Whatever gun you get, just make sure you hang a flashlight on it somewhere.

I think you should get the new 12 gauge Taurus Judge, and load it up with some 3 1/2" shells. Taurus is going to unveil it at this year's SHOT show. It will be CA compliant, and on the safe handgun roster.
