So, this is what I think I know about the 80% law when buying 1911 frames, they do not need to be DROS's because they are not finished and can be bought any time, without paper work until finished. But what about an STI frame? or even a replica made STI frame? I know someone who is a machinist and made one for fun. and it works. Could I buy one from him if its a 80% frame? what if its all done? could I still buy it? Its not on the roster and im not LEO, so would that pretty much answer my question with NO? Anyone finish off one of these 80% frames before? are they a lot of work??? thanks for the input ahead of time.

Logically, if he put a serial number on it, he should be able to transfer it. Your friend should have built it as a roster exempt single shot, converted it, and voluntarliy registered it. Since you are buying it via ppt, you do not need to worry about the roster. At least, I think that's the way it works. This stuff is confusing.
(im thinking about the completed pistol, not the 80% frame. I think an 80% frame is just a hunk of metal...)

you might want to look into the law a little more as far as I remember you cannot buy a frame only for a pistol in calif anymore because it has to be on the approved list.
also if your friend is playing around making frames he needs to have a manufatures license and an FFl i believe so dont get caught.Comment
