    Bobb a 1911?

Does anyone know of a gunsmith in OC that can install an Ed Brown bobbed mainspring housing? Pros and Cons?

I have found that Brownells offers an Ed Brown bobbed mainspring housing, but it would obviously need some machine work and re-finishing of the frame. I would consider a good 1911 smith for this work if somebody has the knowledge in the job at hand.

There is a company offering to do it on Gunbroker.com. The results look decent.

Alan Tanaka is in Torrance. Not far from Orange County and awesome work. I would go to him.

If it's a high-end variant, you don't want to bob it. You need to Robert it.

              You're welcome.

Will O'Hara in Corona is a bit of a drive down the 91 from you, but I can't recommend him any more highly. His work is outstanding and very reasonable cost wise. Give him a call at 951-371-4971. If you haven't already purchased the mainspring housing, you may want to talk to him about a custom bobtail. The standard ones I see are much too dramatic a cut for me, so I'm having a more rounded version done. I spend way too much time looking at 1911 porn so I always end up with my own take on some custom feature I've seen, then have Will work something up for me. Whatever you do, enjoy and post pics!

It looks just plain beastly and the extra heft up front does help manage recoil a bit better. Plus, an angel told me that when God called JMB to heaven it was to build him a full rail 1911!

I assume this is for a ccw weapon? It does aid in concealment and comfort while holsterred. If not for ccw then the bobtail really has no pro's. As for con's it provides a bit less grip for controlling the pistol and will require some fitting and finish touch up as well as the initial modification cost.

However if you like the look the con's certainly aren't overwhelming even if you don't plan on ccw'ing.

For general range use I prefer the standard grip frame which leaves the option of installing a magazine well. I'm also a fan of Wilson's rounded butt mainspring housing for a ccw pistol.

Depending upon the size of your paws, it is possible that you might dislike the loss of control ability more than you like the improvement on printing under clothing and the comfort improvement. I have seen some rounded butts done by some smiths that have the looks all over the angled cut. I personally don't care for the looks and I would never buy one or have it done. Rounded butt maybe. May I suggest that you chase down a couple of gun stores that have EB Kobra's in stock and handle them. The rounded butt would probably not be as detrimental to handling but would be similar, IMHO.

                      Just my .02.

                      Handled 'em, shot 'em.

To me, it's not a "must-have" mod, and I'm not at all convinced of its utility.

It does look cool, and unless this is going on a CC piece, really that's the only real reason to have it.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm not that crazy about the look personally, just wanting a piece that doesn't print. I will handle one before I undertake the irreversable mod for sure. I appreciate the heads up on Alan Tanaka, Bolsa and Will O'Hara. I'll contact them and see how spendy this little project will be. If I proceed, I'll post pics once complete.
                        Thanks Again!
