    New sp101

Thanks to calguns picture gallery and my local gunshop I was forced to purchase a new Ruger sp101 This is my first revolver. Question is, what kind of defensive ammo do you prefer in .357. Oh yeah, Pics in 10 days

For .357, a light to moderate load. You can thank me later.
What he lacks in lean, he makes up for with mean.

I tend toward 125s and 110s in my shorter barreled version. Recoil is not a problem, I use the Pachmayer round butt rubbers - probably the only gun I have using rubber grips.

I always get winchester ranger t-series ammo for all my guns in the HD or SHTF scenario. If i need to take someone or something (zombies maybe ) down, you can always count on T-series ammo to get it done!

In a revolver weighing under 30 oz and a short barrel (under 3") I'd load it with Speer Gold Dot .38 Spl 135 grain +P's. Or if you must have .357 Mag, Speer Gold Dot .357 Mag for Short Barrels which is the same as the .38 +P load above except a little hotter. Practice with different loads and see what you can honestly and reasonably handle under stress and under different scenarios, shooting controlled pairs, shooting from retention, one handed, with a Surefire flashlight etc. The same as any defensive handgun. Are full power .357 Mag loads something you're willing to practice with on a regular basis? Is practicing with .38's and loading up with .357's really a good thing? If brute power is the only thing that matters we should all be shooting 10mm semi-autos and .44 Mag revolvers. But its not.

I guess I could go with a .38 round. Might not be a bad idea.

I kept my old Security Six loaded with 158gr hollow points for 20 years.

Now I prefer 125gr hollow points with only a 4" barrel.

I keep Winchester 110gr JHP's in my 3" model 66 and my 2" model 60, they give good accuracy with out punishing recoil.

I second the 135 gr Gold Dot 38 Spl+P round. This ammo was made for this gun. Shoot a few full-power 125 gr 357 magnums out of the SP101 and it will be obvious that that ammo was designed for full-size handguns with 6" barrels.
