I've seen them do this in Arizona, too. There are still tons of guns on the streets. A lot of you are forgetting the main reason a lot of people turn these firearms in is because they are stolen.

"The remainder of the guns will be "turned into steel,"..."

...then sold as scrap to China to once again be made into guns, missiles, airplanes, submarines...or cheap consumer goods for stupid Americans.
I don't know how political I am, I don't get into all that crap....I just love freedom...

Looks like a 10/22 to me. I'm more concerned that the officer is pointing it at his buddy :-\

That certainly is an M1 Carbine:Look closely at the shape of the bolt handle and the bolt. The receiver doesn't have the enclosed top with small ejection port on the side like a 10/22. Other indicators include:
                    • "Sight-channel" groove in the top of the wooden handguard
                    • That it has a wooden handguard
                    • Front sight ears with holes in them
                    • Shape and location of the rear sight assembly (aft of the bolt)

Carbines and 10/22s do look very similar. I think Ruger did that on purpose. However, this is a Carbine.

Main reason for my reply: I've noticed a trend that in these news story threads "Do I see an M1 Carbine...?" seems to come up more often than not. Just a silly observation.

more importantly do I see that officer's finger in a trigger guard? I'm not sure.
