1911 Slide locking back on half way empty mag

    Hey all,

I went out to the range today, and I took my RIA 1911 with me. I was shooting Tula ammo from my new SAI mags, and twice the slide locked back on me while there were still rounds left in the magazine, then other times, it wouldn't lock back on an empty mag.

I was wondering why it's doing this. Either it could be the cheap Tula ammo, or the bad weather (It was raining pretty hard when I was out there and the gun got a tad wet), or maybe I just need to clean in, though it's been only 100 or so rounds since the last cleaning, but that ammo is very dirty.

    Thanks

It is your new mags or your thumb is riding the slide stop.

      Several possibilities.

It could be your support thumb bumping the slide stop.

It could be the shape of the Tula bullet is different enough from "normal" fmj that the bullet bumps the slide stop.

It could be that the magazine has a weak spring allowing inertial feeding (often coupled with limp wristing) allowing the bullet to contact the slide stop.

It could be that your slide stop needs some better fitting where it contacts the follower and to ensure there is clearance while rounds feed.

Remove the slide and reinstall the slidestop and try to visualize what may be occurring.

Damn, I didn't think about the position of my thumb! My pistol technique is really bad, I'm pretty sure thats what it is.

Quick way to test the mag. Using your UNLOADED GUN WITH A EMPTY MAG put mag in gun rack slide the follower in the mag should engage the slide stop.

sure it wasn't a half full mag?
check your plunger spring on the side also.
That may be a CG first!
