If its already in CA, I think you can pick it up and fill out the Intrafamilial Handgun Transaction Report Form from the CA DOJ, pay $19 and you would be good to go. If it out of CA, it has to be shipped to an FFL who will DROS it to you. But they need to know how to do intrafamilial interstate transfers so it bypasses the roster. You would need an HSC in either case I believe.

Find an FFL near you who is knowledgeable, this shouldn't be a problem. OC Armory is one of the best is you're near them

          12078...
          (2) Subdivision (d) of Section 12072 shall not apply to the
infrequent transfer of a handgun by gift, bequest, intestate
succession, or other means by one individual to another if both
individuals are members of the same immediate family and both of the
          following conditions are met:
          (A) The person to whom the firearm is transferred shall, within 30
days of taking possession of the firearm, forward by prepaid mail or
deliver in person to the Department of Justice, a report that
includes information concerning the individual taking possession of
the firearm, how title was obtained and from whom, and a description
of the firearm in question. The report forms that individuals
complete pursuant to this paragraph shall be provided to them by the
          Department of Justice.
          (B) The person taking title to the firearm shall first obtain a
          handgun safety certificate.
          (C) The person receiving the firearm is 18 years of age or older.

          (3) As used in this subdivision, "immediate family member" means
any one of the following relationships:

            CaliB&R has it. *

Inheritance bypasses the Roster - file the OPLAW form and you're done - you don't even need to wait for an acknowledgment.

Fill out the OPLAW form, put "Inherited" in the "how aquired" box, pay your $19 and your GTG.

If the 1911 was inherited because of Grandpa's Death and you're receiving it because of an operation of law (will, probate process, etc) then you can simply go get it wherever it is. Intestate secession/bequest is one of the few ways that you can receive a firearm from another state without involving an FFL. Seriously. When you get home, fill out the op-law form, send in the $19 with it, and you're done. In states that do not require an FFL for in-state PPT or any sort of registration, you wouldn't even need to do that... although having something on hand (document) stating how you received the firearm would be a good idea in those states.

This is one of those roster-exempt transfers. Just don't import an AW rifle/pistol/shotgun until the AW laws die... even if you inherit them.

Thanks for the correction, I thought interstate always needed to go through the FFL. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.
