If its already in CA, I think you can pick it up and fill out the Intrafamilial Handgun Transaction Report Form from the CA DOJ, pay $19 and you would be good to go. If it out of CA, it has to be shipped to an FFL who will DROS it to you. But they need to know how to do intrafamilial interstate transfers so it bypasses the roster. You would need an HSC in either case I believe.Last edited by CaliB&R; 12-19-2010, 1:55 PM.An err on the side of caution, is still an err. - meComment

Find an FFL near you who is knowledgeable, this shouldn't be a problem. OC Armory is one of the best is you're near them

Inheritance bypasses the Roster - file the OPLAW form and you're done - you don't even need to wait for an acknowledgment.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!Comment

Fill out the OPLAW form, put "Inherited" in the "how aquired" box, pay your $19 and your GTG.Comment

If the 1911 was inherited because of Grandpa's Death and you're receiving it because of an operation of law (will, probate process, etc) then you can simply go get it wherever it is. Intestate secession/bequest is one of the few ways that you can receive a firearm from another state without involving an FFL. Seriously. When you get home, fill out the op-law form, send in the $19 with it, and you're done. In states that do not require an FFL for in-state PPT or any sort of registration, you wouldn't even need to do that... although having something on hand (document) stating how you received the firearm would be a good idea in those states.
This is one of those roster-exempt transfers. Just don't import an AW rifle/pistol/shotgun until the AW laws die... even if you inherit them.Comment

Thanks for the correction, I thought interstate always needed to go through the FFL. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle.CaliB&R has it. *
