    Springfield "Custom Shop" Questions

    Fellow CalGuners,

I realize the info I am seeking is available from various sources including Springfield, but I wanted to get a little more insight and opinion from folks that have actually ordered firearms from the Springfield "Custom Shop".

I wanted to order a Custom Shop Springer MC Operator. I understand the wait time. My questions are:

    * To what degree can a gun be "customized" yet comply the stupid roster? Is it the "basic model" to start with?

    * Will it still be marked "Custom Shop" even if not the FBI/1911 model?

    * Is it worth it?

I wanted to have a Custom Shop MC Operator made, with FS checkering, and a few other features - PLUS all of the features the FBI gun has. I did kinda want a specialty made gun, maybe one a kind. But I am opened minded...

Am I all messed up here? Could I do this a better/different way?

    All input greatly appreciated.

PS Is there any diferrence in whom I order this kinda' product through? My FFL is a dealer, but would higher volume dealers get better results?

You are going to need to buy a rostered pistol first and then send it for the work, that is about the only way around it with what you are interested in.

I don't know if the single shot/ long barrel loophole would be useful in this case.

Why wouldn't the single-shot exemption work?

As long as SA is willing to ship the customized 1911 into CA, I don't think there's any reason why the single-shot exemption wouldn't work.

As long as the base gun is on the roster or you already own it knock yourself out.

Why not just start with the Springfield PC9111LR and just have the FBI gun to start with...it is on the roster

They can ship the gun to a proper FFL holder such as an 07. I bellieve this is the case. The FFL doesn't have all the same restrictions the general public does. Different licenses get you different things.

wouldnt have an extention barrel installed basicaly kill the entire point of having a match grade barrel lovingly installed by a gunsmith.

I'm assuming you're talking about a scenario where he would get this 1911 via the single-shot exemption.

The extension barrel would be installed to meet minimum barrel and overall length requirements so that the 1911 can be DROS'd as a single-shot handgun. After the 10 day wait, the owner can take possession of the gun. There's nothing legally stopping the owner from returning the gun to it's original configuration. The lovingly fit and installed barrel can be re-installed and the 1911 can be returned to it's original semi-auto configuration.
