QUESTION: M&P 9 + Apex RAM

Ok... I ordered a new M&P 9mm and the Apex hard sear, USB, and RAM today after reading recent posts of how great the gun is with the Apex parts.

I went to the Smithandwesson website and got the SKU for the CA compliant model. The CA compliant model says it has "no internal lock."

Is the "internal lock" the same as the "magazine disconnect safety?"

It didn't occur to me until Scott at Apex mentioned that I had to remove the magazine disconnect safety to properly install the RAM. If I didn't remove the MDS, then there would be a significant reduction in the sound and amount of reset from the RAM. So I ordered the MSD spring from Apex also. Scott mentioned that without removing the MSD, then I couldn't dry fire or fire a chambered round if the magazine is not in the magwell.

So...does the CA compliant M&P 9mm come with a magazine disconnect safety?

Do I have to remove the MDS prior to installing the RAM?

What happens if I leave the MDS and install the RAM?

What happns if I remove the MDS and install the RAM?

I watched the video on youtube on how to remove the MDS, how to install the hard sear, and how to install the USB, but still don't know how the MDS and RAM affect one another.

Please chime in...I just want to get a better understanding of what each part does and how they are related.

You can install the RAM with the mag disconnect removed. You should also be able to install the RAM with the mag disconnect still installed, as the RAM goes in a hole that isn't already occupied by a pin.

I would suggest removing the magazine disconnect because it's just really annoying to deal with when field stripping the gun.

No. The internal lock is a little hole you'd see on the left side of the gun for an internal key-locking mechanism. Not all CA versions have it... and it appears most "off the shelf" stocked versions from dealers do not include this feature from what I've seen.

PS If I'm not mistaken, the pin for the internal lock is where the RAM would go, which is why the internal lock makes a pistol non-compatible with the RAM.

I just talked to Randy and Scott about this very subject this week. Basically the MDS pulls the trigger bar in the opposite direction of the RAM so they work against each other. They'll both still function but you aren't getting the full benefit of the RAM with the MD still intact.

It's extremely simple to remove the MD and the RAM install is even easier.

Up date: my M&P 9mm didn't shipped until today. Was hoping to DROS it today, but my Apex parts came as schedule. Pulling out the RAM, USB, and mag disconnect safety spring from it's bag gave me the "what the hell is this,". "what the F***A did I get myself in?". My heart was definately racing...got back on YouTube to watch the installation video. I must have skipped over parts of the USB installation video where Randy used the vice (I don't own one) and where you have to remove and reinstall the rear sights.

So... Is it hard to remove the rear sights like the XDs and HKs?

How do you know where to align the rear sights when you have to reinstall it? How do sight it in? Do you drift it with wood peg (so it doesn't mar the metal/finish) and mallet AT the range?

The stock M&P plain sight is easy to remove but the night sight is pain in the butt. I had to borrow the tool from someone to remove it.

Rollincode3.... I have the standard factory sights. Would it be easier if yours were standard factory sights?
