Question about upgrading mag and recoil springs

    Hey guys,

I was going to order some replacement mag springs for my Sig p226 and I can get the factory springs or the +5% or +10% springs. It sounds like if I go with a stronger mag spring I also need a stronger recoil spring. But I would think that a stronger recoil spring will have a slight effect on reacquiring the target. Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

I would go +5% and make sure it's a spring that doesn't set (buy either Chrome Silicon or Wolff). A extra power recoil spring will lessen felt recoil but light loads MAY not cycle. It may or may not help you reacquire your target on a followup shot faster (too many other factors).

Also, in general, a heavier recoil spring is better for your gun if you're shooting hot (+p) loads on a regular basis. You do NOT need to upgrade the recoil spring if you're upgrading the mag spring and vice versa.

I've never owned a Sig, but from owning different types of automatics:

+5 or +10% magazine spring shouldn't require a more powerful Recoil Spring - unless your factory spring has considerably lost its power... I also don't know the factory power on a SIG - some manufacturers tend to ship their guns seriously under sprung. I found heavier recoil springs come with a number of benefits - quicker time back on target, quicker lock up and less instances of pelting people with my brass... Also, if you find your gun "hick up" when chambering a new round - stronger recoil spring is a must.

Then again, I'm a type of person whom likes a heavily sprung guns - if my 9mm comes with 14lbs spring, 16lbs is suggested, 18 lbs is what I'll have installed (sometimes even 20)... I never had a problem cycling heavily sprung guns, even with wimpiest of ammo. There is a back and forth discussion of whether heavier recoil spring wears down the gun when the slide slams forth with more force, but I don't subscribe to that... The most I'll accept is that slides with heavier recoil springs should not be released on empty mag.
