I saw that and thought about it, but already ordered mine and San Diego is six hours away.
I'm always a day late and a dollar short!

Like the OP I wanted a 4" 1911 9mm but had to either go up to 5" or down to 3".
I've got a EMP on order since I CCW.
The conversion would be an option and about the same price(maybe a little more) when all is said and done. The EMP with tax and DROS is costing me $1234.00
Add the fact that you get the size you really want and it may be a winner.
In this case, it wouldn't matter from the standpoint of going via a 07 FFL to do the single-shot exemption anyhow. I'll have to investigate the Kimber 9mm (in various flavors) a bit more to see if it's a good choice or not.

Looking at the way things are panning out, I may go ahead and pick up a M&P 9mm (4.25" version) as my training weapon and save the clams for a 9mm 1911 as a vanity piece later on. I'm not dead set on a 4" barrel really... it's just a good all around size for a variety of activities. 5" makes for a nice range/target gun though. I doubt I will ever get a CCW in our lovely state, so 3" shorties are even less a priority for me at this point.

Thanks for all the great info!

PS thanks Bill for the lead on the EMP... definitely makes me go "Hmmmm..." trucking all the way to San Diego would make for a great vacation, but probably won't happen by next weekend.

Here's the list of CA approved 1911's in 9mm from both Springfield and Kimber. I've personally got the PI9134L from Springfield and really like it. Finding a CA compliant 1911 in 9mm can be difficult, but keep searching the usual online sources (Buds, Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, Davidsons, etc.) and you should be able to find what you're after. Once CGF gets all of CA to be vSI for CCW, I'll be looking for the Springfield EMP in 9mm.

        1911 EMP Compact PI9209L / Alloy, Steel Pistol 3.1" 9mm 2/6/2011
        PI9134L (ambi safety) / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" 9mm 4/26/2011
        PI9134L / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" 9mm 4/26/2011
        PX9130L (ambi safety) / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" 9mm 12/31/2011
        PX9130L / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" 9mm 12/31/2011

        Stainless Target 9mm II / Stainless Steel Pistol 5" 9mm 10/14/201
Sorry about the formating of the model list.

Yeah, it's funny how all the approved pistols are either 5" barrels or the one 3" shortie. Not even one 4" model on there.

          Ah well.

PS use [code] tags to keep the format.
