    Ruger GP-100

I'm really wanting one right now. I've owned S&W 686's in the past, various Ruger single actions and bought a Ruger Redhawk last year and was really impressed with the out of the box trigger of the Redhawk compared to any S&W's I've owned. (Contrary to popular wisdom). I've shot them before so the GP100 and Ruger revolvers aren't new to me.

Its gonna be about a month before I can bring one home so I'd like to hear your thoughts on the GP100 esp. the newer ones coming out now. Any differences? For instance I think I like the older grips compared to the finger groove Hogues that come with them now. I know the older grips are still available through Ruger.

    I have a stainless one in 6”

I love the Hogue finger groove grips and can't imagine the gun with anything else. Even with the hottest loads the recoil is pleasant and fun. Trigger out of the box was a little stiff but a little range time and dry firing makes it as smooth as glass

Might wanna look into replacing the front sight, but other than that, a perfect six shooter

The hogue grips with the finger groove definitely tamed the recoil compared to the older ones, though I think the grip with the wood insert is better looking. Also I don't like the warning roll marks on the barrel...I don't know why they have to put that there.

yea, its lame.. but at least I see none of it when I'm enjoying my range time shooting the gun. All is forgotten and forgiven then.

I also have the 6" SS model, it's a great gun. I thought the grips looked ugly based on the web pics, but now I wouldn't dream of replacing them. Fits my hand like a glove and even full power loads feel soft! No need to mess with the trigger either, it feels good to me.

Have a four inch stainless model. Have owned it since the mid 90's and run every manner of .38 special and .357 magnum ammunition out of it ....~grows wistful~ even the much dreaded Black Talon planet destroying rounds that slew a minivan full of puppies and nuns with each shot, tore away the ozone layer, and nearly exterminated the nation's entire supply of stuffed animals. Just before all was seemingly lost, useless people in dark colored suits in DC, who hate me and liberty, saved the day.

            But I digress...

+1 to breaking in the trigger. It is stiff out of the box but will break in, indeed, smooth as glass.

+1 to also maybe replacing the front sight. It comes stock a plain black blade.

They are BEAST revolvers. A seriously Book-of-Eli-had-a-love-child-with-the-Road-Warrior type of revolver.

I still have the old wood/rubber grips on mine.

The Hogue grips I'll reserve judgment when I get it out to the range. I just like the looks of the old grips and the options of different grip inserts. Also I think the older grips might give me a slightly better trigger reach which allows me to put more finger around the trigger for better leverage. No biggie.

Nah, keep going man. You were on a roll!

I will say I prefer the new fonts they're using for the rollmarks these days.

The internals of the working action is not the same with the redhawk. The GP100 is like the Super Redhawk. Either gun are built like a tank and will take a lot of rounds to get them out of kilter.

I have a 4" stainless version and I like it a lot. To me, it's everything that a carryable .357 should be. Rugged, handles recoil very well, and the single action trigger is actually very good. I've only put 300 or so rounds through it so far, but it's handled everything I've thrown at it like a champ.

I have a 4" Stainless made in 1990 or 1991. I have the 3 sets of grips for it; Hogue rubber, Hogue wood, ad stock rubber and wood grip. The Hogue Rubber feels the best.
I had a good trigger job done on it and installed the orange front sight. I have also fired everything from .38 wadcutters to the 'Baby Killing' Black Talons in .357 mag. For HD, I usually keep .38 +P JHP's at the ready. I also keep a box of .357 mag 125 grain JHP's as 'Back-Up'. You know, just in case I get 'Home invaded' by a herd of Buffalo.
The GP100 should outlast you and your Great Grand Kids. Enjoy!
