A family member just bought a 1911 RIA GI. It's his first handgun and he wanted to add some new grips to it. Can anyone recommend Pearl/Ivory grips? Anyone else checked this cool pistols out? 450 plus is a great deal! I couldn't see anything bad about them.

Check around they are awesome! I got my RIA Tactical for not much more than $450. Grips can be had at the usual supects, such as Brownells, midway, eBay, etc...
I love mine more than I could have imagined!
Have fun!

Yea I was really surprised at the finish on that one! I loved the fit and finish as well. He got the full size 1911 model, not the compact, just the standard GI model, so if I'm looking to get him grips for Christmas, would the grip size be a 1911 commander/government?Comment

1911 grips abound. Actually, there are too many to choose from. I recently posted about the VZ grips which people really like. I would have ordered some but the styles I like are too aggressive for concealed carry. Check out RAASCO grips as well.
I ordered a set of black Navidrex micarta grips from Brownell's. From what I read, the Navidrex "ivory" grips are quite nice and they are very reasonably priced. I should have them early next week and can post some pics on my 1911.Comment

When asked about the grips on his Colt Single Action Army, General George S. Patton replied: "They're Ivory, only a pimp in a New Orleans whorehouse or tin-horn gambler would carry a pearl-handled pistol"
Good advice"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
"What we get away with isn't usually the same as what's good for us"
"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"
"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"Comment

As a "basic" or "Plain Jane" 1911, you can't beat the Rock Island Arsenal 1911's as made by Armscor in the Philippines. The RIA series of 1911 pistols are a great "base gun" ready to be customized for whatever purpose you desire and will accept the vast majority of parts that a regular Colt would accept. I'm really pleased with mine. Each pistol here has a minimum of 3000 rounds through them, so I can't complain. Yeah, I've replaced pins, springs, etc. and I've upgraded a lot of the parts to fit my needs, but if you play rough with your toys, things wear down, and if you want to modify a gun for a specific purpose, then do it. The beauty is, with the RIA series, you can swap out parts easily and still not break the bank. For my money, the RIA 1911's work just fine and any gunsmith worth his salt can work on them just as easy as a more expensive gun.
As far as grips go, if you're looking for pearl or ivory, check out Eagle Grips (www.eaglegrips.com/). My brother loves them on his Ruger Blackhawk and S&W's. Worth checking out at least. Not my cup of tea, but that's why they make chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, right? If you want something more affordable, less fancy, and more rugged, check out Navidrex Grips (see: www.brownells.com/), or VZ Grips (www.vzgrips.com/). Both will last just fine and will be impervious to oil, grease, blood, mud, and sand. I use both types. I play hard with my toys and both brands have worked out fine so far.
