Question about serial numbers

When people post questions about the age of a gun using the serial number they seldom give the full number , just the first several digits and then a couple of XXs.
Why is it not a good idea to not reveal the entire number?

Why is it not a good idea to not reveal the entire number?

Generally the last few digits are meaningless when using the S/N for identification/manufacturing information. Also, paranoia...no need to post a serial number of a gun you own...some believe it could be used for nefarious purposes
