    Nighthawks?

Interested in getting a new 1911 for general range time, HD, and mostly because I lack a 1911 in my collection. I like the Nighthawks and would appreciate any input on their quality & CS. What's the difference between the GRP Recon & the Talon other than the rail?

    Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure the main difference between the GRP Recon and the Talon is the rail. Aside from that, the Talon seems to have a few more finishing touches, serrated slide top and a checkered back, and the Talon has a magwell.

For much more info and feedback from NH owners, check out the Nighthawk subforum on 1911Forum.

They sometimes have cosmetic issues, like the rear of slide not mating-up to the rear of the frame, fronstrap checkering, etc. Handle before you buy.

Yeah, look back at a post I made about 1~2 years ago about my NHC. Cosmetic issues, (the mechanical issues they did take care of), but in the end, after spending nearly $3k, I expected even cosmetics to be damn near perfect.

I would not buy another one sight unseen (I special ordered mine, which is why they would not replace it for the cosmetic issues). After talking with their CFO about it (he was the one that called me), it seems they know they have issues, but I was told "at some point, you need to just start building guns or no one works".

Long story short, the beavertail fit was not that great (a good fit should look almost seamless....it was obvious the rookie that cut this one cut the frame back too much on one side). More importantly (and this took me a while to figure out), the entire frame is machined slightly off center (which is why the checkering extends to the grip on one side, but is short on the other). Since then, I have seen other NHC's on store shelves and when I checked them closely, some are cut exactly the same way (off-center), so they know about it and continue to ship pistols.

The gun still functions well, but like I said, for the amount of money, I expect cosmetics to be just about perfect too.

Bottom line, handle and scrutinize any NHC before you lay down hard earned cash on it.....

For that money you could get a true custom, you'd just have to wait some.

For a higher end 1911, especially for a first time owner, you might want to look hard at a Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special. It's really a nice pistol for the price. The money you save would buy a lot of ammo, leather and a refinish if you prefer something else.

I recently got hold of my NHC GRP. I have shot approximately 250 rds w/o any problems. I had mine custom ordered from George at Gunslingers. I had the words removed and kept the GRP letters. I had the trigger pull increased from 3.5 lbs to 4.5-5.0 lbs. The tolerance is tight, workmanship inpeccable, and customer service great. I know for a fact if I have problems in the future NH will make it right and pay for shipping bothways. I carry if for off duty use and may use it in IDPA in the near future. I wouldn't give it anythought and buy with confidence. If your going to purchase one do it soon, I've been checking out the site and seems like they increased their price.

If you have 3K go to Cylinder & Slide and get a real 1911 custom, spec'd out by a Tier 1 guy that knows how to spec a 1911 so it runs like a Glock.
