    Stupid newbie 1911 question

So if i buy a CA legal new 1911, can i buy this frame and use it? if not, are there any current ca legal 1911s with full dust covers?(under $2k)?

No, the frame is the firearm portion and it must be on the roster unless you have it built up into exempt form. You could always find a cheaper full dust cover 1911 and single shot exempt it. Either way it will require a bit of angling, depending on how much time/money you have available.

Or if you want the full length dust cover without a light rail you could look at a http://www.lesbaer.com/Monolith.html and have Valkyrie Arms in Milpitas do a single-shot conversion for you. It would be pushing over your budget though with fees and sales tax though.

It is also worth mentioning that just swapping frames (or slides, depending on how you word it) isn't all that easy on a 1911. It certainly isn't just a drop in part. There is a whole lot of metal to metal contact going on there. When you buy a new slide for a 1911, it needs to be fit to your particular frame or vice versa. It isn't like a glock where if it fits on one G17, it will fit on another G17.

i take it that single shot conversion means that you will have to load 1 bullet per shot and does away with a magazine?

There is an exemption to the roster for certain single shot pistols so if you temporarily convert a pistol to single shot with no magazine, it complies with the law. Once you own it, you are free to convert it back. It's unlikely anyone would shoot it as a single shot.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

OOH! i see. interesting. that opens a whole new can of worms for me. guess it's time to re-evaluate my 1911 choices. is there a list of these exempted pistols that can be had in CA in single shot? is it here http://certguns.doj.ca.gov or is there a separate list somewhere?

There's no official list because in theory, you can do this to any handgun. If you search this sub-forum for "single shot" yiou'll see a bunch of threads that explain it. i don't see a sticky about it.
