    Good quality revolver..

I'm shopping around for a revolver for home defense. I was looking at S&W or Ruger. Any other brand names out there people can recommend? I would love to get a Colt but a they seem rare this days and if you find a python in excellent condition expect to pay a premium price. Any recommendations or should I go for my first choice..S&W.

S&W makes a quality revolver. What caliber are you thinking about?

Hi. Stick to S&W and Ruger there is almost no chance that you can go wrong.

If your budget is tight go for a Ruger GP100, if not then go for a S&W. You can't go wrong either way.

The 4" barrel would be my choice.

Ruger or Smith, nothing else worth looking at if your life is going to depend on it unless you find a money tree for a Colt.

Shoot both then decide. For the money, IMO, S&W all the way.

Colts are nice, but S&Ws are more durable and I prefer a non stacking DA trigger pull. I do own a python to stare at, but the M625 and M686+ go with me to the range much more often.

For HD size and weight are your friend. A full lugged barrel, like the S&W 686 and 586, adds weight and tames recoil and muzzle rise. A 4" barrel would be better if you're going to pack it, but for the home I'd go with a 6". It will really allow your loads to get up to speed, especially if you're shooting .38s.

Another plus with this model is the new versions are being made with a 7-shot cylinder.

Older K-frame Smith or Ruger (Security / Speed Six, GP-100, etc.) in either 4" or 2". Can't go wrong. Will work everytime. Good Luck.

+1 I agree the S&W 686 4" is a great HD weapon. I prefer the trigger on the S&W over the Ruger.

This is basically a Ford vs. Chevy thing. You will find people vehemently loyal to one or the other. My choice is Ruger. Their revolvers are built like tanks. Rock solid durability and reliability.
