Did Colt ever use a serial number that didn't start with a "C"? A friend has a Colt that the serial number is XX511. We are trying to identify but can't find an exact serial match.

Call Colt on Monday - they have a help and information service. Give the guy all the data you have and he will get you some info within a minute or 2 and if he cant, he'll suggest a letter request for more research at a small cost.

Old GI issue ones didn't have any letter prefix. "Cxxxxxx" is older commercial ones. Modern ones have letters. Mine from the 70's is xxxxxB70.Comment

it could be a special run from the custom shop i have a colt 38 super gold cup match target serial number xx7 only 500 made and i could not find any info till i called colt and they gave me the date and info for free. good luckComment

Many Colts don't have C prefix serial numbers. As stated, the only ones that did have it are the oldest of the Commercial models.
