So I am wondering about various other models of 1911 besides the Springers and Rocks, and such. I looked at a Sig, and one big difference I noticed was the external extractor. Also how about the S&W 1911s? I don't know anything about them, any owners here?

I have a Sig GSR Revolution 1911, and love it. Some people complain about the external extractor, but I have had no problem. Shoots flawlessly. I also have a Kimber compact and a Springfield loaded, can't complain about ether one. I don't own, but have heard good things about the Smith&Wesson 1911s. Good luck in your search.

Sigs are my favorite guns but I do not have experiance with their 1911's. I've owned high end ones such as Nighthawk and Wilson Combat and one of my favorites which I doubt ill ever sell is my Marine Core Operator (with VZ Operator grips). I would be carefull on what you go with, I will never say anything bad about a Sig, if you go with Springfield I would go Operator series whether it's the TRP or MC you can't go wrong otherwise you may as well look at customs just depends on your price range and shooting skill.Comment

Smith 1911's fly under the radar. I think you get a mid level 1911 for a decent price. The purists hate the external extractor and that they use a firing pin safety.
They use a different dimension cut for their sights, so if you look for aftermarket sights they have to be for the Smith 1911 line.
They have a pretty good reputation for out of the box reliability. Smith has a very good reputation for their repair depot.
The frustrating part of their guns is the description. They use a 6 digit number (eg 108303) which is a stainless steel govt with rail. Could they come up with a name, nah that would make it easy. They designate their models as SW1911 or SW1911PD. The PD stands for personal defense and it is the line of guns that have an aluminum alloy frame.
Smith does not have the breadth of different models that Springfield and Kimber have.
Mine was reliable out of the box, didn't need a break in period to fire my self defense ammo (Gold Dot) and it hasn't had any feed or ejection failures. I like it enough that I've ordered another model and hope to get it out of jail at the end of this week.Send Lawyers, Guns and Money - On second thought, hold the Lawyers.Comment

Thanks guys. My only reservation for these other lines would be replacement/aftermarket parts. I would need to add a ambi safety as I am a southpaw.Comment

I have a Sig TTT that is basically stock except for the grips and cleaning the trigger up to remove gritty feel and not the factory set weight of the pull. The slide to frame fit is not bank vault, but not bad and the barrel fit is decent with the bushing being tight and the barrel hood just having a slight play. Reliability is very good for it has not jammed on any factory loads, but my reloads of LSWC profile moly-coated have been in the 97% department. Accuracy is excellent as I've shot 2" groups at 25 yards rested on the bench. It seems the accuracy just gets better as it breaks in. This is from my last outing:

I have a Colt 1991A1 commander circa mid 90s and this Sig TTT beats it by a long shot. The wise man said just find your place

I was just rambling on and on in the "1911 under $1000" thread about how great Sig 1911s are for the money. Check out my post over there.
