Hey my brothers...I need an honest,California price check on a 686-1,6" mint,but no box...looks to have less than 500 thru her....need to pull the trigger quick on this one...thanks in advance

Prices are down a little since their peak 18 months ago. The 6 inch is not as desireable in general as the 4 inch. $525-$550 is a reasonable price these days as long as it has original stocks in good condition, and good mechanicals. Check for "Overstamp M" under the crane on the frame to confirm retrofit/recall was completed by S&W for the firing pin spring and recoil shield bushing. They are great shooters !!! If you don't own one, buy it. HTH c good

i agree, $500- $600 in the condition you propose considering the down turn in the market. original box and papers can make a difference in price...

4" and under barrels are more popular. Chances are of all the revolvers you see in the used counter, they're usually 6" and up. Pre-lock K, L, N frame snub noses are rare in California.

PS There was a recall on the 686s, but apparently just recently they have stopped modifying them free of charge. There will be an "M" stamp in the crane area to signify if the gun has had the recall modifications done.

Here is the recall notice...but from what I understand these instances were extremely rare and had to do with the make-up of the primers of the time (recall was sent out in the late 80's)

I paid $500 for my 686-1 (4" bbl) about a year ago.

Try emailing David Valenze dvalenze@smith-wesson.com just provide the serial number and the gun model number with your email...It's been many moons since I used that email...so hopefully it's still good...if not, try emailing anyone at S&W customer service.

A LGS shp has a minty 4" 686 no dash priced a $600.

As to finding a date for S&W get a copy of "Standard Catalog of S&W".

Good price at $500.00 Go for it. Also, don't worry too much about the recall unless this is a primary personal protection weapon. The cylinder could bind up under high pressures due to primer flow into the recoil shield bushing. Rare, but it did happen under heavy use and heavy magnum loads. I have two, unmodified, shoot mainly .38 spl, and have had no issues whatsoever. HTH c good
