I was at the range the other day and saw a guy with a new S&W Model 21 Thunder Ranch 44 spl. Looked like a nice piece. Scanning the CA list of approved handguns today, I did not see this listed as approved. How do you suppose he was able to get a gun not on the list???

I heard him tell another shooter that he just bought it. I think the Thunder Ranch was a limited release from S&W for 2004 only. I guess he could have been visiting from a free state, but I'm pretty sure I've seen him at the range several times before.Originally posted by Technical TedMaybe he bought it prior to 2001, before the Safety Certification process was established.
Perhaps it was on the list initially and it's certification expired, in which case it would be removed from the list.
Maybe he bought a stock, approved model and sent it out to have it worked over. AFAIK Nothing prevents you from having a handgun modified once it's registered to you.Jim

The M21 Thunder Ranch has been on the list for a while. Seen them as low as $649.
The new M22 .45ACP Thunder Ranch is supposed to be in drop testing. Hopefully we'll see it soon. The first 300 S&W made sold very fast.- Jeff
