It would be a perfect world if Dad could just drive over with various Off List Handguns and hand them out to sonny-boy....hahaha..gawd that would be fun...Ain't gonna happen.
I can't begin to explain how wrong you are. It is completely legal for dad to drive the gun here, gift it to his son through an FFL, and drive home.

I take it into my books as a ship-in. Take a copy of dad's license, and have him write a quick note saying he is gifting the gun to his son...make, model, serial number...done.

Dad can not drive it here with the intention of gifting it to son? that's new to me, my daughter is going to bring a handgun to me this month and gift it to me, of course upon arrival to Cali, it will go through a FFL to meet Federal laws, but your saying it has to be shipped into the state and can not be hand delivered to FFL?

I'm no expert, but I'm not sure your correct on that one?

        Dad should sell it.

Have Dad sell the Glock in Arizona and give you the cash to buy a new Glock here in California.

        Might be cheaper.

Really, why focus on a GLOCK when legally (and a little money) you can have DAD get you a HK product (like a cool HK 45C) an off list handgun and go thru the same hoops.?

Offlist handguns are EXEMPT from Inter Family Transfers....

You're extremely lucky to have a DAD right next door in a FREE STATE that has plenty of cool normal handguns.

In from Oklahoma and bring me an Offlist HK Mark 23?..show up at my FFL and transfer an offlist weapon to me as a GIFT?

wow, I didn't know that. And I apologize for misreading the law.

Realistically, it would be more likely that when I go to Arizona to visit him he would gift it to me then. That being said, I would have to ship the gun to an FFL in my area along with a note from my father along with a copy of his DL and receive it from them, correct? To be following every letter of the law, that is. Speaking of law, what law would be broken if the firearm were driven to from one state to another? Anyone know if it's legal in Arizona to PPT a firearm to a non-Arizona resident? This seems to get thicker and thicker...

I'm starting to think that's a better idea... If I'm going to go through the hassle I might as well be getting a pistol I can't obtain here. I wonder how he would feel about that...

And if the gun came from out of California, you violated Federal law - INTERSTATE transfers, determined by the states of residence of the parties, REQUIRE an FFL.

So, this means when I'm in Arizona for Christmas, my father and I have to go to a gun shop, turn the gun over to them and have them mail it to another gun shop in my area and we'll have to pay both shops transfer fees?

At this point, I'd probably be spending $200 on transfers and another $50 for a 10 round mag?
You don't need to ship from an FFL, only *to* an FFL.

You can disassemble the 15 rd mag and just take it home with you, to use the parts (follower, base plate) to repair the new 10 rd mag you're going to need to be legal.

If you go to another state and buy a gun, it must go through an FFL in the purchaser's state. Your scenario of going to AZ, dad gifting you the gun, and shipping it to an FFL in CA is the correct way to do it. Make sure your FFL knows the procedure and will do the transfer in this manner. While there is nothing wrong with it, some FFL's are uncomfortable/unfamiliar with the process and won't process them.

any FFL who will process the transfer, anywhere in the state...presumably one close to the purchaser's residence, so he doesn't have that long of a trip to do paperwork...and then go back in ten days to pick it up.

Some FFLs will only accept shippments from other FFLs...so it's wise to check with the receiving FFL before shipping.

A couple of weeks ago, a guy at the range had the misconception that high cap mag could be brought to CA, assembled and used. A high cap mag kit can only be used to repair your current legal high cap mags. There are those that say screw the law and do it anyway. I am not one of those guys. Follow the law until it is changed, stay off the radar. But that is just me.

The handgun can not be defined as an assault weapon, SBR or SBS.

The H&K Mark 23 has a threaded barrel and would be considered an assault weapon in CA. Therefore it would not be legal for you daugher to bring it to CA, much less transfer it to you.
