I could only speak on the .500S&W...The 500ES Model.

    Thanks, Ernie

      Smallest (practical) .45 = Kahr PM45

If we don't consider some single shot oddities or derringers, the smallest .45 ACP on the market is probably the new Kahr PM45, with 5+1 capacity.

      Specifications

      Capacity..........5 + 1
Operation.........Trigger cocking DAO; lock breech; "Browning - type" recoil lug; passive striker block; no magazine disconnect
      Barrel...............3.14"
      Length.............5.67"
      Height..............4.49"
      Slide Width........1.01"
      Weight..............Pistol 17.3 ounces, Magazine 2.0 ounces
      Grip..................Textured polymer
      Sights...............Drift-adjustable, white bar-dot combat sights
      Finish...............Matte stainless steel slide
      Magazines.........2 - 5 rd stainless

I don't see the new Kahr PM4543 on the approved list.

What a crazy question. Have you ever held those rounds in your hands? There's a ginormous difference between them. Comparing the guns they're fired from is like trying to compare the size of the smallest compact car with the smallest 7-passenger van.

.50AE isn't used much outside of the Desert Eagle platform ( a couple others have guns that use it, notably the LAR Grizzly and Magnum's own revolver).

You kind of missed some other important cartridges in-between what you listed -- like the 454 Casull and 44 magnum.

In .45 ACP I'd go with the Kimber Ultra RCP II. I've yet to see a compact semi in any of the larger chamberings you listed.

Wheel guns are the best choices in the heaviest loads. The 500S&W shown above is the smallest they make. The big 6" barrel one is tough to shoot, but not uncontrollable. Anyone actually shot the snub .500?

I have fired the 3" Ruger in .454 Casull.... It's a real handful.... 3 rounds was enough for me... NOT FUN!

Unless you're facing a bear, stick to .45 ACP

Kahr in .45ACP or the new SA EMP in .45GAP when they market it. The 500 is awesome but a little much for a carry/conceal gun, even the short barrel models.

Since you didn't mention new or used or on the list, in production or no longer in production, I'd say other than derringers or (I believe) the still produced Semmerling, an AMT DAO Back Up is about the smallest 45 ACP most of us could get our hands on. I have one and although recoil generally doesn't bother me, this one's a pain to shoot and has about a 20lb DA pull. But it is pretty small @ 5.75" long, 3.9" high & just 1" wide at the grips.

I feel the Ruger Alaskan in .454 Casull is easily controlled using the lighter loads, here is a short video of a cylinder full of 240 gr. Magtechs:

If you're going to download it to 44 mag levels why not buy a 44 mag and save some money?

I fired the alaskan at Raahague's and thought it wasn;t bad at all. Lots of noise andblast, but compared to a 4" .500, roughly 1/2 the recoil.

A custom 6 shot 4" blackhawk on .50Ae would be a neat little back country gun. the AE kicks less than either .454 or .500.

how would I save any money with getting a .44 mag? the price of the Alaskan is the same regardless of caliber and .44 mag ammo is not much cheaper than .454 Casull or .45 LC, plus if I want to use full power loads in the .454 Casull than I have that option.
