    AR57 Pistol?

Anyone ever try making a CA legal AR57 pistol? If so what does it take to convert the mag to a sled? Can it be done?

It can definitely be done, probably a lot easier to start off with a .223 single shot exempt pistol and then swap out the upper for a 5.7 one with 10 round mags.

Easier to do this project after you already own another easier to convert AR Pistol. That way you can legally order the upper, order a pre-converted 10-Rd magazine and then figure out the homemade maglock on your own timeline. When it comes time to order a second pistol lower (if you want both of them completely built up) you can then use your other AR pistol upper which is much easier to convert to single shot (prebuilt single shot bobsleds are available for magazine fed ARs).

This is based on the following...

      1) Cannot own a SBR upper and a rifle lower at the same time without already owning a pistol lower.
      2) Must be a completed build and single shot to DROS it unless it is a PPT. However many dealers will allow you to bring in your own upper and peice together your desired end result.
      3) Converting the AR57 platform to single shot is likely much trickier than other calibers.
      4) You can find an already converted 10-Rd AR57 mag much easier than a single shot one.
      5) I've been told the magazine lock is a tricky install and not something most dealers will do for you. Your likely going to need some time to do this on your own.

I've built 5.56mm and 9mm AR Pistols before. Always more of a pain than a normal AR rifle to get DROS'd, since I prefer to buy stripped lowers in bulk and build them up from there as funds become available. Building them is as much fun as shooting them. Not something you can do with a pistol. It has to be one at a time and unless doing a PPT it has to be a completed build.

Not being able to slip and end stock on them has always bugged me. In my heart of hearts I desperately want an SBR, so the AR Pistol is a bit of a let down. It's not like it is practical for self defense without the stock so it is basically a plinker. Which is great, if you don't already have a 100 things on your wish list higher up on the priority scale. It is definately one of things you do to get it out of your system, or do just to do it, and then move on.

That said, I have had my eye on the Bobcat MP5 Pistols. I'm not crazy about the maglock designs for the HK or lack of stock, but I wouldn't mind adding an MP5 to my collection just to have one. And the longer barrelled MP5s are just way too annoying. So the pistol is the only CA legal way to go on those and not have something completely cheesy. If I want a long barrel like that I'd stick with the AR15. Just my $0.02.

And that is why I posted the question here. Thanks guys. I didn't even thing about building an ar15 pistol first and just swapping uppers. Not really worried about PPT or DROS because I'm starting off with an 80% lower.

The raddlock only requires the removal of 2 allen screws. I've done it myself before I ran my AR57 featureless. Its not that hard, unless you were fabricating your own.

Right around standard AR prices. Price increases of course comensurate with number of extra goodies on the pistol

no need to fix the FH unless you need to make length on the barrel. As long as the barrel is over 6", there is no need to pin it. The presence of the maglock makes it legal to have a threaded barrel.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?
