Here is a quick version of the whole deal.

Government Size: 5" Barrel, normal size frame. The most often encountered version of the 1911. Grips that fit this, will also fit the,

Commander Size: 4.25" Barrel, normal size frame. These two have interchangeable grips, but they will NOT work on an:

Officers Size: 3" Barrel, shorter frame. These need specific officer grips.

Note also, that anything specifically noted as a "slim" grip will need different screws and bushings to work on whatever gun it is sized for. A government sized "slim" grip panel will only work on a Government or Commander size gun with special bushings and screws.

Note also that standard (colt) terminology is

      Government: 5
      Commander: 4.25
      Officer: 3

      While Kimber uses

      Custom:5
      Pro: 4.25
      Ultra: 3

      Springfield uses:

      Full Size: 5
      Champion: 4.25
Compact: 3" (actually, they might even use ultra, or micro compact terminology, I'm not 100%)

Very, VERY rarely you might encounter a gun with a 4.25" (commander) barrel but a shortened (officer) frame. These would need officer grips.

Not to detract from an otherwise excellent post, but I believe both Kimber and Springfield use 4" barrels, not 4.25" on their "Commander" size pistols.

"An extended slide stop is the second most useless part you can put on a 1911"

"While Ruger DA revolvers may be built like a tank, they have the aesthetics of one also,
although I suppose there are a few tanks which I owe an apology to for that remark"

                Also,

                Enhanced Micro: 3"

It's also 3" but designed separately from the ground up so they don't have the same grips as other 3" compacts.
