Walther P99 underrated?

Is it just me or is the Walther P99 the most underrated handgun? I think its the least mentioned handgun in this forum, I haven't seen it carried in gun stores. For a reliable German made handgun around the price range of a Glock, I was expecting more recognition than the Sigs and H&K.

I hate that guns trigger with a passion, my buddy owns one and he likes the way it fits his hands, but also doesn't like the trigger. He says "i just got used to it".

I agree the trigger on my p99 (40) sucks, the reset is way longer than I like but yes I had to get used to it also. It is accurate and haven't had any stoppages so far with my reloads.

I enjoy my P99 very much. For me the only trigger that beats the P99's AS trigger is a finely tuned 1911 trigger. YMMV.

S&W just doesn't promote the P99 as they're more interested in pushing their own products.

There isn't a lot of these to go around that's why you don't see them on shelves often. Also, these are at least a buck fifty more than similar Glocks.

It's underrated indeed. I held an AS and the trigger was nice. I will buy an AS if the price is right.

I had my P99 (40) out to the range yesterday. It has just about 4k rounds through it, always reliable and accurate, while the trigger reset is long it works for me. My only complaint is my thumb is too short to easily push the magazine release. Its one of the early models (2004 I think) with the ski ramp trigger guard. I'm happy I bought it and intend to keep it.

That's a pretty broad generalization considering there is 3 completely different trigger options for it.

I had a P99 AS in .40 for a couple of years. Fantastic ergonomics and tack driver accurate. Ended up selling it because I decided I only needed a .40S&W gun for CCW. If the P99 had been 9mm (or if I had wanted the .40 for range shooting and home defense), I would still have it.

Yes. it is very under-rated. The only P99 model that is worth getting is the AS model in 9mm because it has an interesting and good DA/SA trigger action. Also, because that pistol was built as a 9mm from the ground up, not as a .40 SW.
When you look at how many polymer handguns today are using interchangeable backstrap (P2000, XDm, Glock Gen4, Px4, M&P, SigPRO), the P99 has been doing that since it was introduced in the mid-90's.
Smith & Wesson is doing a really s***ty job in marketing and promoting it as they import it.

I have a first gen 9mm version. Finding accessories for it is difficult. Holster selection is limited and California mags for it edge into the fifty dollar range. I got mine as an alternative to Glock since I wasn't entirely comfortable with the Glock trigger setup. I got mine in 2002 for about 500 dollars, brand new.

mine was purchased with a trigger job done on it and it has a better trigger than all of my glocks 2 of which had competition triggers put in. To bad I have to sell it

I too am surprised at the lack of enthusiasm for this gun. It took Glock 4 "generations" before they realized people have different sized hands! (I'm guessing here, but isnt Walther the first to offer an adjustabke grip?)... And the ambi mag release is very handy for quick mag changes. Mine is very accurate, seems as reliable as my Glocks, and it really does fit my hand better than any other pistol.

I have the QA version, which is quite odd, but when you think abut it, it is safer than a Glock if you're carrying with a round chambered. Problem is, with the QA triggers, if you de-cock, there is only one way to re-cock. That is achieved by racking the slide, not enough to eject bullet, just enough to charge the striker. There is no safety per se, but when the p99 QA is de-cocked, it cannot fire. So the tradeoff is never getting Glock leg, but having to cock weapon before it will fire.

Other wise, IMO the p-99 is simply a Glock in a prettier package!
