Handgun selection vs. training

There are many people who are not "gun people" that want a gun for HD. For these types I would advise a double action revolver. They need to get some training and occasional practice. It is easy to see if the gun is loaded and no safeties to worry about.

If a person has access to rental guns or a friend with several guns, he/she has many options. The person who does not have access to a lot of firearms has a more difficult decision.
I personally suggest a good caliber in a heavy gun, but not the biggest caliber. New shooters tend to get intimidated by heavy recoil. Lightweight guns tend to have more recoil.
OTOH, 'friends with guns' tend to recommend what they like, not the best choice for the new shooter.
Whatever someone chooses, they need to be proficient with it. Only training and practice will make this happen.
