    Smith and Wesson 625-4

Anyone have one of these revolvers? What are your likes and dislikes with it? What is the going rate for one with a box of ammo through it?

    Thanks in advance.

I cannot speak to your "-4" subvariant.

    However, in 2005 I acquired a new 4" 625-8 (45acp).

It's one of my favorite handguns - great trigger and tackdriving accuracy. It especially loves Magtech 45ACP ammo. I have yet to try Fed Match ammo but I am sure it'll do great.

Pros: Moon clips make loading/unloading fast.
Common cartridge, cheap to shoot. Cheaper to reload.
Low pressure cartridge, easy on the gun. Note the same frame is
for .44 magnum and .45 Colt.
      Ultra reliable.
No safety to worry about...other than the connection between your
      finger and brain

Cons: Heavy for a .45acp gun...for about the same weight, you can get a
.44magnum, .41magnum, or .357 magnum. All of which will have a
lot more oomph both to the shooter and the shootee.
      Only 6 shots...standard 1911's hold 7 or 8 with flush magazines
      A 1911 has a simpler manual of arms...carry cocked & locked & the
first round has exactly the same trigger pull as the others...though
the shooter has to remember to engage the safety.

Pricing will be higher in the prk than in other states...I'd think around $500-ish as a guess. Others may be able to pin it down for you with more accuracy.

If I were looking for a .45acp gun, I'd pick (and have picked) something from Colt or Para-Ord.

And the trigger pull on the 625 alternates between DA & SA at random?

I don't own a 625 but I've put a couple hundred rounds through a friend's, and I rather enjoyed it. Low recoil, common ammo, accurate, fun to shoot. It is a bit heavy for a carry gun, but doable, and for range/recreational/competitive shooting it'd be a blast. I think for one with just a box of ammo through it $500-550 would sound about right.

Not hardly...you have sa and da to feed into muscle memory. With a 1911, only sa.

I have a very early 625-2 and it is an excellent handgun though I like my 6" 25-2 a little bit better.

You might want to check out the S&W 325 series...it's built on a lightweight allloy frame/Scandium, but the barrel has a steel insert for strength and life of the barrel.....but it is pricier...saw one at Turner's - Pasadena for $875.00

That is ridiculous. Who shoots a double action revolver, single action for defensive purposes or competition ? The only single action application may be hunting and for that 45 acp is marginal at best.

I'll stay out of the DA/SA comments. Back to topic. I have a 3" and 5" 625 and love them. The .45 ACP is easy to shoot and since its on a "N" frame you can always stoke it with +P or .45 Super ammo for a little more pep. Also if you are inclined you can get .45 Auto Rim and eliminate using moon clips. Very versitile and when my wife goes shooting with me she would rather shoot the revolver as it doesn't jam and have safeties to deal with. No the .45 isn't a .44 mag, but I can shoot alot more .45 before my wrist wants to fall off.

Yea, $500 sounds right, $550 with the box/papers and maybe a few moon clips.

                  Good luck.

I didn't even know that I'm supposed to commit the SA feature of my 625 to muscle memory. Dangit, back to the range!

I bought one way back when Turner's was blowing them out. I love mine but loading the moon clips is a pain in the *** aside from that it is a great pistol.

                        Loading moonclips 101:

Lay the round on its side on a table or similar surface.

Press the moonclip down onto the round. Repeat.

This is faster than using those plier looking doohickeys.

For removal I have the pocket Wilson Combat tool. $4.00

                          Great IDPA revolver gun.
Short rounds dump out of cylinder fast.
Loading is fast also with the round nose bullets.
If you can't shoot good, at least look good shooting

Use .45 auto rim cases and you don't need moon clips, great for target practice. I like Starline brass. I load them the same as ACP cases without a problem.
