Smith & Wesson Model 581

I was at a distant gunshop while coming home and found a very neat Smith & Wesson 581 357 Magnum revolver. These are basically just fixed sighted versions of their popular 586/686 series. What really attracted me to this one was it's factory nickle finish, the vast majority of these are blued. It came with the original Magna grips which I switched out to the more comfortable S&W factory Combat grips. The revolver was regulated with 158 gr loads, something S&W does with all the fixed sighted 38/357 revovers. The last photo is showing a 6 shot group fired with Speer 158 gr Gold Dot 357 Mag rounds. This is a pleasant and accurate revolver I wish Smith still made. I'm glad I found this one, you never know what you'll stumble across at small gunshops.

Those are not easy guns to come by. I would love to add a blued one to my collection.

A good find on a rare revolver!

Not so many nickle versions around.

I've had 4 L frames starting with a 6" 586, a 2.5" 686, then a 4" 686 and finally the one I like best, a 4" 586.

They are a wonderful revolver. Many happy years of shooting.

Now I want to find a like condition 681 as a companion piece. I'm trying to research how many 581/681s were produced. The L frame is probably the perfect frame size for a 357 magnum.
