GSSF MEmbership and Glock 19

I'm signed up for membership a couple of months ago but have not received membership. Does anyone know if they are a bit slow to get them out?

I'm looking to buy a glock 19. A friend warned that I should only use certain brand 9mm bullets for my gun as it may not take all 9MM bullets. Any truth to this?

He mentioned that he reloads his bullets and that they may not work for the glock 19.

I know walmart has cheap ammo.. the federal brand.. can i use those or basically any cheap 9mm ammo i can find for target practice?

Also, for home protection my friend suggest that i get more expensive bullets. I'm a newbie so do brands matter when it comes to bullets?

My glocks eat everything I feed to them. For target shooting I just try to avoid ammo that is steel cased (brass only). As far as home protection you are easily going to get a million different opinions on what is best to use. I use Federal hi-shock.

The only bullet type you should avoid is lead. But even then you should only avoid them if you do not clean your barrel on a semi-regular basis. If you do then you can pretty much shoot anything you want to.

Almost all manufacturers recommend only using factory ammo because factory is more "controlled" than reloads, less prone to reloader error, and is backed up by the maker if the ammo causes issues.

I'm waiting for my GSSF G17, so no first hand experience until tomorrow w/9mm. However . . .

1. Glocks have a hexagonal barrel, and not land and groove rifling. This means the use of lead bullets can result in rapid lead fouling, high back pressures, and possible catastrophic failure. Glock recommends only commercial, jacketed bullets (FMJ or JHP). No reloads. This may be partially CYA, but most gun failures seem to be the result of faulty ammo (i.e., inadvertent double charged handloads). Some reloaders use "hard-cast" lead successfully, but with care (i.e., frequently checking the barrel for fouling).

2. That being said, virtually all commercial ammo is fine. I've heard that Winchester White Box (WWB) 115 gr rounds tend to be weak and may cause FTFs/FTEs, but some folks have no problems. Walmart Federal cheap stuff should be fine, if not the most accurate.

3. Buy a bunch of different brands and different bullet weights, and see what you like (and what doesn't work).

4. For HD, virtually any of the current commercial JHPs are fine, although you'll find lots of opinions here if you look a little bit.

5. After you find what you like for a target round, get JHP in the same weight with close to the same ballistics. Run at least a box or two of the JHP through to make sure you have no cycling issues (bad news if it happens when you really need reliability).

6. It will take you some practice to get used to the Glock trigger. Get some snap caps and practice dry firing (SAFELY!!) till you can get a trigger break without the front sights moving.

7. Enjoy! I've got a G23 that I'm very happy with.

8. Shoot GSSF matches whenever you can find them, and take time to talk to folks there.

Glocks eat every kind of ammo. Walmart Federal is fine. I am unable to recommend a self defense round but maybe some other poster might.

Reloads are fine but avoid unjacketed lead bullets with stock barrels. The lead bullets tend to coat the inside of the stock barrel with lead. You can solve this problem by getting an aftermarket barrel or by using jacketed bullets.

Glock however only warranty their gun while using factory ammo and not reloads.

My glock eats everything from +p HPs to weak reloads. Beauty of Glocks.

I think your friend refers to a Lead bullets.

With the GSSF discount i wonder what is the best value gun? I notice that most of the Glocks are retailing for 599 where i live.. most models..
I can probably get a 19 for 425 and a 21sf for 491.. looks like the 19 would be a better deal for me assuming that i pay cash for the 21sf in i buy it within this year.

Any input as to which is the best gun deal with the membership discount?

First and foremost, I would like to say you made a right choice in choosing Glock specially G19.

Second, regarding about the issues that Glocks have preference when you feed them. I would say that is . I feed my Glocks everything and it goes flawlessly including reloads. I have yet to see or experience FTF/FTE for I haven't had any still. Unlike with my other 9s.

Is there a big difference between 19 and 34? i know the 34 is more expensive but at 500 still reasonable. Would it be something i should consider getting instead of the 19?

My first center fire pistol was a Glock 19 and I ran almost 22k rounds through it. All kinds of stuff too; wolf (steel, polymer coated, and brass) NATO, federal, pmc, blazer aluminum cases, WWB, lots of my reloads and my buddies and reloads from miwall and surefire. I loved that gun until I got my M&P and I just put my new G19 at the back of the safe... Now I can't stop dry firing this one. Enjoy one of the greatest pistols ever made (the G19)!
