I remember in the past we could buy them. They don't need to be on the list, they're just hunks of metal.

80% frames aren't firearms, so they don't need to be on the list. Just like 80% AR receivers don't have to be on the list in order to be made into an AR-pistol.

Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Due to a recent BATFE decision, you won't find "80%" 1911 frames. You will find what are being referred to as 60% frames, and they require a bit more work (something like rails, ejector pin hole, sear pin hole, disconnector hole).

If you don't mind the kinda loony "we prefer payment in gold and silver" mindset, look into Kristi Tool Ordnance, who sells a number of AR, 1911, and other unfinished frames.

Unfinished frames are not controlled federally or at the state level. You can purchase, import, and finish them in CA, as long as the final product is configured lawfully. For pistols, that includes meeting the dimensionally-compliant single-shot configuration, which I don't recall the specifics right now. IIRC, 6" BBL, 10.5" /OAL minimum.

Once you've finished the frame and built the pistol, use the voluntary registration form to register the pistol, and then you can modify it to any other lawful configuration you want (semi-auto, mag-fed, 5"BBL, etc..)

Nope. See http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=349846 . Defeats the purpose.

This isn't the thread for it, but unless your home-built pistol comes into play as a crime gun which Mexico possesses and wants to trace the origin, then the e-trace system is irrelevant.

No, I don't. But its fun to go all when this stuff pops up.

But seriously, not a bad idea to build a few of your own to keep off grid, no?

I see no need. If you have one or 100, you're already on the grid, and one unregistered handgun doesn't really change anything (assuming that when they come they'll be taking your guns and ammo, rendering any remains rather useless) and that your longguns are already unregistered (AW, .50BMG, NFA excluded)
