    Colt Mustang issue

Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this. I have a Mustang that sometimes fails to lock back after last round. It will fail a few times in a row and then it works for a little while. And my other issue when I pop a new mag in and drop the slide it doesn't go. I have to whack the back of the slide pretty good to go into battery. I've tried racking the slide instead and that doesn't work either. Feedramp is nicely polished. I'm thinking maybe magazine? Any Ideas?

    Thanks, Albie

If a specific problem occurs with a magazine, then probably magazine related, but common to both problems is the slidestop.

So buy new mags, if problems still occur, then get the gun to a smith.

The recoil springs and guide are prone to wear out.

In order of things to check:

        mag spring
        recoil spring
        magazine
        slide stop

Have you tried it with more than one mag? If so, does it happen with all mags?

Thanks for the replies, I have 2 mags however the last range session I only had the one with me. I need to get it back to the range with both mags and do some tests. I have stainless trigger, guide rod, and an aftermarket wolf 12lb. spring. so I think I'm good to go there. I did notice when field stripping that the slide stop spring kinda wants to pop out of its spot maybe that spring needs to be replaced? I will try the mags out and maybe buy a couple more, I know one of the mags is brand new. Thanks again, Albie

Is 12 lb standard weight spring? I can't remember but Wolff has it on their web site. The slide stop spring - I'm not too familiar with that, but I think you need to be careful to keep it properly configured when assembling.

            Good luck.

Not sure on that but it came from McDougall Specialties the guide rod and spring came together as a set. Here is a pic of the spring I'm referring to. However I'm pretty sure it's one of the mags, I found my other mag and the slide drops fine on that one. So I just buy a couple more mags to be safe.

My Mustang is 100% reliable except for this occasional first round load glitch.
I have seen this in other auto pistols many times before.
Mine always chambers when you give it a nudge.
For self defense use, in the Mustang and other autos, I load the top round in the mag with a more tapered bullet shape like a Hornady XTP, then the rest of the rounds as wide mouth hollow points.

The slide stop not locking back after the last round has never been much of a concern to me in autoloaders.
I prefer 100% reliable chambering and firing to last round lock back.
Failure to last round lock back in an auto is usually caused by the magazine follower not rising up high enough to push the slide stop all the way up.
Sometimes with a metal follower there is a separate tang to push up the slide stop that can be bent / adjusted.
Plastic followers can sometimes be fixed, depends on the design.
If the magazine spring is weak it may have problems lifting the slide stop.

It is also possible to bend the magazine feed lips so the top round sits hose high(er) and then has a more direct path to the chamber.

Yeah I'm almost positive now that it was the magazine. I went through lots of ammo without any problems with the other magazine, last time at the range I only had this one mag and it had problems every time. Everything is fine now with the "good" mag. Thanks guys!

Glad it's working. You can now buy mags direct from Colt at their web site...
