Gun Paint?

So I was cleaning my Sig P226 and grabbed for my clean rag to wipe the outside of my slide down before reassembly and accidentally grabbed my rag with bore solvent on it. It stripped the glossy black finish off and basically two-toned my gun. Now the slide is a dry grey color, but the lower is still the nice glossy black. What, if anything, do people suggest I do? My current ideas are: 1. Leave it 2. get some brownells and refinish (paint) it myself 3. take it to a gunsmith and see if they can refinish it for me. I really appreciate any help people can offer. How bad is it? Can you provide a picture? If you do it yourself it may never match, if its not too expensive get a gunsmith to do it. If it was me...Duracoat!

I was gunna say duracoat. You can do everything yourself, but it will only come out as good as your abilities. Ive seen some calgunners who offer duracoat for really good prices. If it were me, ide send my slide to a well known calgunner, or shop who offers duracoating

What was on there that wiped off with gun solvent? Not the stock finish I hope.

Yeah, I want to know how and what you wiped off. Can we get a photo, and a more detailed description of what you did. I have a p229 and when I clean it, I get sloppy. I wipe everything down once it is all soaked. The last thing I want to do is have to be super cautious about what cleaning products touch what parts.

When I was new to hgs I used to spray gunscrubber on my slide and it would turn grey then I'd oil the slide pretty heavy and just leave it to soak in, was a USP btw

Rub some WD40 or Oil on the slide, than wipe it off.

What did you use? I don't trust that aerosol stuff, even the so called "synthetic safe" kind seems to do weird stuff, never had any problems on a slide though. I usually use good 'ol Hoppes #9, it's been on pretty much every part of all my guns and I've never had a single issue. Sigs are supposed to be pretty tough I thought, this kinda surprises me.

I don't have a camera, otherwise I would have put a picture up with the post. I talked to a guy at sig and he said I cleaned the nitron off, but it won't affect the gun in the long run. It would be $115 to get it "re-nitroned" thru sig. I was using Outers solvent.

wow, this is the first i've heard of a non-paint finish being stripped by a simple gun cleaner. I'm going to have to be a little more cautious of solvent choices should I ever change from using hoppes.

If outers doesn't say anything about "don't use this on non-bore surfaces" or "this will f--- your precious pistol's finish up", they might owe you the 115$ to be restored back to your factory finish.

I agree with mrlighting. I cleaned my sig p229 slide with Hoppes. It dried it up and turned a greyish brown color. I re-oiled it and became black again. Nitron is known not be a perfect match to the dark black polymer frame. When it's new it's super black, but eventually the nitron will change color.

Shoot some CLP on it. The pix is of it NOT oiled. Haven't took it out for awhile..

I wouldn't use Duracoat, it's messy, smelly, easy to eff up, and is an automotive paint. Look up Sherwin Williams Polane paints, that's what Duracoat is.
It's hard as a rock and goes on thick. I like Norrell's Moly Resin, easy single component, no mixing or measuring. You should blast and heat the part before spraying. Moly Resin can be sprayed inside and out, it goes on thin and doesn't build up. Very durable, and the best part, it literally soaks up gun oil. It doesn't have the VOC off gas like Duracoat and after you bake it for an hour, let cool, oil it up and your done.

Right after I did it I coated it pretty thick in gun oil and wiped it down, but nothing happened. Last night, after reading some of your comments, I covered it in gun oil again and let it soak overnight. This morning I wiped it off and what do you know; it's black again. The slide and frame aren't perfectly matched, but it looks a lot better. Strange thing. I think I'll be leaving it the way it is.
