    1911 sights

I am in day 2 of my 10 day wait on my Rock Island Armory 1911.

I got to shoot 50 rounds through it and my only complaint is the trigger pull, short slide release, and sights. Those former two problems are not real problems, but more of an issue of convenience. The latter, though, is something I would like to fix soon.

Does anyone know of good sights that drop right into the RIA?

If not, what brands are the best initial fit/easier-to-fit-in sights that you guys have had success with?

Good thread...I was wondering the same thing with the sights on the GI. I am also in my 10 day wait for a RIA 1911A1 and those sights are horrible.

Drop in sites are fine but milled on sites are better. I prefer Novaks but i always wanted to try a set of Hiene slant pros 8's.

Heh, I just bought a RIA 1911 off another CGNer and was wondering the same thing. The sights just plain suck, compared to my Kimbers.

First thing to check is whether you have the standard Colt dovetail - .330 X 60 degrees I believe - or the Novak cut. You can get good sights in each, Novak cut seems to have more aftermarkets available. Looking through Midway is a good place to start - there are low profile, fixed, adjustable, lots to choose from. You need to take front sight height into consideration. If you get a markedly higher rear sight you'll have to also get a higher front sight.

I think Nowlin makes a "Novak type" fixed rear that uses a standard Colt dovetail rear. Slid in the base and screw down the sight base to anchor it. I have a few Champion adjustable rea sights on some 1911s. I like them because they are low profile and the entire rear sight blade moves - presents a nice, clear picture.

When you remove the issue sights remember to move them left to right and of course be careful. Some sights are in so tight you'd swear they were part of the slide. A brass punch and a vise should work.
