    9mm ammo suggestions?

Hello everyone. I am 5 Long days away from taking home my first handgun. With some advice from the good people on calguns, along with my own research and rental experiences, I decided to purchase a Glock 17 RTF2. I am now looking for more solid advice on what to feed this animal. I am looking for some powerful HD ammo and also some cheap ammo to practice with. I live in Sacramento and so if anyone knows of some specific stores with good prices then please let me know. I may get into reloading further down the road but for now I am just looking for what I can buy in stores. Much appreciation for all the advice so far and for any more to come.

For practice and general shooting, I buy whatever ball ammo that is cheap. Wally World (Wal-Mart) usually has the best deal going, but stock up when you can. I like my old favorite, the WW Silvertip for serious business. Any good JHP that reliably feeds in your weapon will work.

For practice get whatever you can find cheapest. For HD, any of these will do. Just make sure to function test them in your gun first. I prefer heavier (147gr), but they're all good. I think right now I have Golden Saber in my nightstand drawer.

Shop around for practice ammo. I use Glaser PowR' Ball. It's supposed to have tested pretty well and it functions fine from my Glock 17.

For HD, it might be a good idea to find out what your local LE uses (if they have 9mm), and try that.

For range use, I tend to buy whatever's cheap, although I tend to focus on what 's cheapest among the better known brands...

Essentially covers the list. Wal-Mart is the cheapest.

This is simple. Learn to reload. You'll save about 45% over factory 9mm Win White Box. 100 rounds runs me about $10. You save even more when you buy a 45.ACP.

Just something to think about in the future. Good Luck!!!

                  Ammo

For practice factory ammo, I usually end up with Winchester White Box, Federal American Eagle or Magtech all in FMJ. My rule of thumb is about $12/box. When I get it for less than that I am happy, more not so much.

For real world, I think the Federal Premium in JHP is pretty good stuff. I think Explorer1046 has a great deal on some of the 147 gr LE stuff over on the ammunition for sale threads.

the Sac Sheriff's department issues the Ranger 127gr JHP +P+ round, I believe Sac PD does also. I prefer the CCI Blazer to the WWB, but if Walmart has Federal at a good price, they have reloadable brass.

I usually stock up on range ammo when Milwal has their sales...they are just up the road in Grass Valley

I thought both agencies used 40 cals?

OP- If you are near South Sac, River City Guns has FMJs for target at a good price.

I am not a big Walmart fan and BOTH of my Glocks (17+19) only jam WWB, so I stay away from both.

My Glocks DO LIKE Remington UMC and PMC if that helps.

Sac SO gives officers a choice of 9mm or .40 on a Sig platform
Sac PD was still a 9mm Sig department, unless they have changed in the last couple of years

Winchester SXT 147 RA9T for SD, target anything that's the cheapest. Your G17 RTF will eat anything, it has on mine and all 9mm Glocks. I've ran tens of thousands of rounds through the 9mm Glock platform without problems, just doing preventative maintenance i.e. spring replacements.

The only problems I've had with factory ammo was with Remington UMC [yellow box 250 pack], my pack had several rounds with the primer backwards. Will never buy that brand again unless it was free or the only 9mm available.

Is PMC Starfire decent self defense ammo? Just curious because that is the only 9mm JHPs I happen to have at the moment.

The capitalist economic model is fundamentally flawed. It is not self sustaining, and can only maintain itself with constant growth. Obviously infinite growth is impossible, so the question is not whether the economy will collapse, but when.

Get your guns, ammo, and food while the stores still stock them. Prepare yourself now, because when the meltdown comes it will be too late.
