Internet Purchase - what's the process

Hey All,

Let's say I find a gun I like from (for example) budsgunshop.com. What's the process for getting it shipped to a local FFL?

Do I call the FFL and arrange it, then order it online, give them the name/address/phone of the FFL and it gets done? Where does the 10-day wait/DROS process happen in there?

Any other california-specific "gotchas" to be aware of (besides the obvious high-cap mag issue)?

Make sure if it's a handgun it's on the "approved list" and if it's a rifle that it's not an "assault weapon"
I ordered a gun from Bud's, called my FFL filled out a piece of paper. Bud's already had my FFL's info so all i did was order and picked my FFL from their list.
My FFL called when it came in to fill out the paper, and that's when the 10 day starts.

Well, Bud's Gun Shop would need a copy of the FFL for your dealer before they would ship. I would let your dealer know that you will have something coming their way. I would also address the package to your FFL and have it in care to You. After your FFL receives it, you have to come in and start the DROS process. So basically it could take almost a month from the time you order to the time you can actually take it home.

The 10 day wait process begins when you complete DROS (paperwork). Some FFL's may begin long guns while they're still in transit, but that's not standard practice.

Keep in mind, there will be a transfer fee on top of DROS. Generally something around $75 is normal (including DROS), although it does vary.

Damn, it's such a pain in the *** in CA. Is it this bad in other states?

Ordering on-line firearms from places such as Bud's and Davidson's Gallery of Guns, Gun Genie is a piece of cake. It actually too easy and most convenient. Not only easy but, efficient and quick. I think a caveman could do it.

Buds has an online list of FFL's, of which mine is listed. So I simply select him at check out...

I try to do biz locally, but it's hard to get decent pricing, plus the online selection is so freakin great...

My FFL charges $75 for shipped in pistols. Check pricing with the FFL and make sure they are OK and give you approval prior to ordering a gun that will be shipped to them.

Buds will also ensure it's on the roster prior to the sale, at lesast they have with me. Very helpful...

The best thing about Davidsons Gallery of Guns is that all the fees are listed. They ship one or two day air to your FFL and you go in and start the paperwork when it arrives. I haven't bought any firearms except through Davidsons for my last few purchases. It still gives the local guy a bit of the action and it keeps my price as low as possible for California. Typically way lower than Turners....

most important thing is tax. some of your local FFL will charge you sales tax (along with $75 fee, negate most internet price difference). some won't. make sure you ask ur local FFL first.
